Eubank v Thompson 1 - what a fight

Rewatching it now, incredible fight, in the early Rounds Eubank dropped Carl and had him hurt several times, despite being much the smaller man - what a chin and fighting heart Eubank had!

A lot of kidology from Thompson in that fight. He had no issues soaking up Eubank's punches in the return match.

I suppose he faked being on his ass too? He was genuinely hurt on several occasions as well as the ones he faked, I think also some of those fake ones were to buy a few seconds to recover, saw him do that throughout his career.

There was a knockdown I remember around the 4th round where Thompson's leg clearly gets caught up with Eubank and causes him to go down. Seconds before this, Thompson seemed to sag dramatically before detonating a right hand on his opponents chin just as Eubank was moving in. As this happened the leg got entangled.

Kidology. A lot of people were fooled, hence why Boxing Monthly picked Eubank by stoppage in the return match. Was never going to happen.

Im watching it now, the knockdown was not from his legs getting tangled - he took a huge right uppercut - if you think Thompson was never hurt , then you are mad. In the 7th Thompson was whaling away on Eubank, when he eat a massive left hook and he staggers across the ring - why on earth would you use kiddology in the middle of a brutal assault on his opponent.

I was at the rematch, great atmosphere. I think that was the fight where Nelson & Ingle harangued CAT for a fight and he got a bit annoyed :surprised:

I always wanted to see Eubank at 175 with someone decent, they could have made the Dariusz fight, dunno why it wasn't made. I think prior to the Calzaghe fight he was in training to fight Prince for some WBO bauble, which would have been interesting.

honestly, you really need to rewatch, Thompson's legs were all over the place on 3 occasions so far.

Yeah cruiserweight just a bridge too far - Thompson's greater weight just ground chris down in the end, but only just.

Thompson must have really done some work on his chin for the return fight, as he was never remotely troubled. I've had this debate before many times. I don't know why Thompson would arse about in there but I totally believe he was in the first fight. It seemed very dramatic at the time. But Eubank didn't believe Thompson was hurt either as I remember, once he'd been suckered into a heavy right hand the first time.

Does anybody remember Rothmann v Thompson? I was screaming at ringside for it to be stopped, then the Cat detonated a bomb and dropped The South African...amazing night

I was covering that fight - remember it very well, wrote a piece on it - Thompson was on the receiving end but lured Rothmann into a massive right hand. Great finish.

Just watched a replay of the 4th round. You can't see the fighters feet in real time when Thompson goes down but it all looked more dramatic than it was, given Thompson had just made that strange sagging gesture a few seconds before. Yes there was an uppercut but there was a definite coming together of feet which caused the knockdown.

Was covering it myself but was a huge Thompson fan. Remember giving Ben Carey a kiss on the side of his head...got a very funny look LOL. Must be a Manchester thing, not a Yorkshire thing!

Trouble with Fighting Thompson, He always got up. One Fighter I always admired, plus one Nice Guy.

Eubank was biting off more than he could chew but did box fantasically well considering. I always thought it was a shame his last 3 fights were hidden away on Sky Box Office, when his immense bravery was on display more than ever before.

Wasn't it on BBC 1 ?? I remember it Rothmann was beating all our good fighters even beating Carl but as usual Carl turned things around after shipping lots of punishment he was a great fighter to watch always exciting

For someone who has posted so many times, i really find this analysis bizarre. Kidology??? He was hurt on several occasions!

The rematch i agree but the first fight was Eubanks swansong

Thompson was hurt in the rematch also - not "gone" like he appeared at times in fight one, but backed up. Remember all Eubank needed to do was survive the last 2 rounds and he would have got the decision in fight 2. He was comfortably ahead in the fight, and Eubank always left enough in the 12th for a grand stand finish - it was like a trade mark of his.

I think Eubank should have had the nod in fight 1 (infact fight 2 was closer IMO). I know he didn't follow up when Thompson appeared "gone", but it was as if the judges punished Eubank for not going for the kill by given some of these rounds to Thompson.

Close fight but Eubank for me. Second fight was heartbreak...... I don't want to see a fighter with permanent damage, but I often think about how well Chris was doing even with one eye.

Eubank is one of my all time favourites but I also loved Thompson. Man, he could punch and had very good boxing skills (exhibited when outboxing Ralf Rocchigiani and dropping him, in Germany) and loved to play possum. Hardly ever see that in fighters.

Eubank took some extremely hard shots from a tremendous puncher, two weights higher than he campaingned at. What an awesome fight and the second was almost as good. Just a shame to see Eubank stopped, for the only time in his career, because of eye damage. Swelling. He was never close to being KO'd in either and was more than holding his own. Amazing stuff, really.

I think (and could be wrong) that he's involved in personal training? He was always in tremendous shape.

Kilburn,
Boxing is all about opinions but I too think you've called it wrong.
Also Eubank v Thompson 2 wasn't Box Office.

I never expect to find support on this one. If Thompson was so out of it in the 7th round as his body language would have us believe, then why did Eubank stand off and do absolutely nothing?

Didn't he take the rematch quite soon after, I remember people raising concerns about the swelling from the first fight not having healed up properly. The swelling came on quite quickly in fight 2 as a result of the swelling in fight one.
