Sorry if this has been discussed already but it has really shocked and depressed me. Cancer.

A brilliant boxer, one of the finest heavyweight jabs ever, an absolutely sublime weapon.

Was in any number of action fights in the 1980s; Quick Tillis, Larry Holmes, Jesse Ferguson, Mike Weaver, Bert Cooper, a dud against Trevor Berbick, then the sad premature stoppage he suffered versus Tyson. His Holmes performance was incredible.

Even past his best in the 1990s he gave Tim Witherspoon, Tommy Morrison and Frank Bruno a rumble. Would've went the distance with Big Frank but for one of those classic British referee stoppages.

A very fun career, should've been heavyweight champion against Holmes, ultimately a sad end.

Yes very sad and yes a good fighter

That's really sad to hear. Last time I read about him I think he was working opposite ground zero as night time security in one of the empty office blocks. Was working hard to earn a living away from boxing and resist the lure of damaging his health for the sakes of an opportunist promoter. A cruel irony.

RIP Carl.
He gave Bruno plenty to think of in their fight. And gave Holmes all he could handle in his world title try.
Some good wins in his career, he got off the floor twice to beat Jesse Ferguson, and was the underdog when beatng Bert Cooper if memory serves me right, and that was when Cooper was good!

I disagree. He'd already recovered before the 10 count but they stopped it anyway.

No offence, but that's bollocks. I only watched the fight two days ago. He was not recovered.

how would 'the truth' have fared against the likes of Haye, Povetkin etc?

Im assuming we are thinking the Klitschkos would have had too much savvy for him?

Williams would likely have been KO'd if he'd been caught again but that doesn't automatically mean Tyson would have found the punches to do it.

I think "The Truth" deserved a few more seconds.

I'd have a prime Williams winning against Povetkin, but Haye and the Klits punch to hard for him.

Great boxer, surprised us all against aging but still great Larry Holmes, then surpised us all even more by getting blasted out by Mike Weaver in his 2nd run at the title.
He was a bit like a heavyweight version of the Black Mamba, Roger Mayweather - great jab, big right hand, excellent skills but a not so great chin. Made for really exciting fights - I remember staying up at a party to watch the early hours ITV show of his shot at Tyson - talking up his chances and saying what a great fight it would be, then it was over before you'd even blinked.

I remember seeing Williams fight Tyson. I can remember the size of Williams in compaison to Tyson. Sadly, i didn't get to see him in teh other fights you mentioned. Perhaps Williams is a classic example of a fighter who would have been excellent and dominant in today's heavyweight division and yet was seen as a b-class fighter when fighting the names you mentioned.

It was scored today with a .5 system and ended up with 144 Holmes, 143.5 Williams

I really don't think Haye or the Klits have beaten anyone near as gifted, fit and versatile as Williams. I know that's going to be a riling opinion to some of you, and I'm not trying to be dismissive at all of the said three, but Vitali's best win is probably... an old flabby Corrie Sanders? Haye's is.... Valuev? Chisora? Wladimir's best win.... er.... Haye? Ibragimov?

Certainly The Truth had his defensive lapses, but that jab - and giant-sized reach - would be a nightmare for today's slower, more ponderous power-mad heavies.

Clearly Haye has the punch to deck him, but Williams in his day generally got up to knock his man out. Very capable and dangerous fellow. Going long against big time punchers like Bruno and Morrison despite being totally shot makes you wonder if his chin problems are a bit exaggerated. He was eating bombs in both those fights.

RIP Mr Williams; the man had a hard life and suffered personal loss; he was a very good boxer, gifted and athletic; he lost his life too young.
