Sad news that former boxer/actor Nosher Powell died on the 20th April.
Nosher had a record of 34 wins, 16 losses and 2 draws.
Fought Albert Finch, Joe Bygraves, Johnny Williams amongst others.
R.I.P. Champ.

Really nice Guy, use to have a Natter with Him often RIP.

I mean this with the greatest respect for the man may he rest in peace.
You would need to be a hardman with that nickname.

what films was he in?

he was in loads,
stuntman in most, eat the rich, played a prime minister I think, comic strip stuff, most bond movies, along with his brother dinny

Very sad news that.

I read his book and it was an interesting insight into the fighters and the era of the 1950s and 60s.

He knew a lot of secrets about the stars I bet and the Soho nightclub scene of that time.

Would have been great to have spoken to him about those days with a few drinks in private.

Also contributed a lot in James Mortons book FIGHTERS about the suspicious deaths of Freddie Mills and Randolph Turpin.

Another good one gone.

I am pretty certain that Nosher was in an old b/white film called Emergency Call, which starred Anthony Steel, Jack Warner and numerous names that will be familiar to anyone who watched British films and TV in the 1950s (Sid James, Thora Hird, Sydney Tafler). The film was about the search for blood donors who belonged to a rare blood group, who were desperately needed to save the life of a little girl who was going to die unless she had a blood transfusion. Freddie Mills was one of the prospective donors that the police/hospital authorities managed to track down. He had a fight lined up and the mother of the little girl was watching the fight and became very concerned when Freddie suffered a cut over the eye but was assured by, from memory, Jack Warner as the kindly police inspector: "Don't worry, that's nothing." Well, I am pretty sure that Nosher was Freddie's opponent in the film.

This is from memory, but I recall a story stemming from a letter written to the London Evening News by two American tourists in London, a husband and wife, who were accosted by a group of youths, who were apparently threatening them and demanding money, and the couple were naturally getting extremely frightened, when a "giant of a man" appeared, knocked one of the youths down and sent another flying back so violently that the youth hit a wall and bounced off it. The rest of the youths fled. The "giant of a man" apparently said "Think nothing of it" when the couple offered him their thanks, wished them a pleasant stay in London and went on his way. I believe that the letter in the Evening News was to express the couples' thanks, once again, to the man who had come to their rescue and to wish him every happiness whoever he was and wherever he was. Reg Gutteridge told me that this mysterious "giant of a man" was indeed Fred Nosher Powell. RIP Nosher.
