Yeah, they both were beats. But SRL was around 124bpm. Ali a bit under at 120bpm.

Is this in like a pound for pound sense? Like compared to their competition? I mean Sugar Ray was like 2/3 Ali's size. He'd have to be faster.

I guess it's how you define speed . Ali's jab was timed faster than Ray Robinsons but there would be many variables to consider

I think that in a relative sense, as in the difference between Ali's speed advantage over other heavyweights and Ray's speed advantage over the other little guys, Ali was faster than his opposition to a greater degree than Ray.

Head to head, a little guy will almost always be faster than a heavyweight. Ray could probably throw 3 punches to one for any heavyweight.
It's simple physics.
I say this out of my ass though, it may well have been proven otherwise.

So, in my opinion, Ray was/is faster than Ali, but out of the two during their careers, Ali had a greater speed advantage when in the ring.

Will we ever know? Surely a beat can't beat another beat.

Sugar Ray Leonard I would have to think was faster. I would think being a little more than 60 pounds lighter has to count for something in the speed department.

Someone told me that Ali was faster than Mayweather, Pacquiao, SRL, or SRR and I had to ask what you fine gentlemen thought. At 17-0 for SRL I would have to say Case Closed :box:

Ray was a bit faster than Muhammad. But you can make a case for Howard Davis Jr. being arguably faster than Ray.
