Ali being drafted

Just a random thought - why if Ali was drafted, refused and was stripped, didn't Joe Fraser also go through the same process? Was he not fit for duty? Or too young?

IIRC it was because Ali chose to take the exam to get into the army but failed and was then reclassified with a pass after war broke out

It's weird Ali was penalised everything, and Joe could just slide in and never have any issues with being called a draft dodger.

Of all the champions, if there was ever a man who didn't get criticised for obviously dodging a war, it was Jess Willard. He claimed that he was simply 'too big' for the Army and had failed an examination. When the military found out about these claims they let it be known in the papers that they would be willing to accept Willard at any time. He shut his mouth and continued giving exhibitions while doing engagements with the Barnum and Bailey's circus. Jesus bless.

That's because he didn't dodge the draft. Frazier had a wife and children so he was not drafted.

Joe Frazier was Married with Children, and was pushed way down the Selective Service list.
I believe Cassius Clay signed up for Selective Services immediately after turning 18 years of age,
which was required.
If Cassius had proper 'legal advice' he would have been able to 'scoot' around the U.S. Selective Services.
Boxing Exhibitions at U.S. Military Bases would have been 'praised and accepted'.

serious question...would you have to prove hardship?
or just having a kid qualifies you for hardship??
thanks in advance

I believe that just being a parent was adequate. As I recall that was the out that Cheney used, or at least one them. I think the reference to hardship was intended for a hardship dependant; non-child cases such as caring for a disabled sibling or parent.

Shame Ali lost those 3 and a half years through a technicality. Maybe he would have retired earlier and avoided Parkinson's.
