King Carlos made a post in another thread that inspired this.
I think Conteh wins a decision here.

I'm thinking of them at their best, which Conteh wasn't in 78.Il Duce wrote:Mr. Rover,

Could have been a possibility.
John Conteh
(Born; May 27, 1951) was Age; 26 years, 9 months
Height; 6' 0'
Reach; 76"
Record; 30-1-0 {22 KO's}
Eddie Gregory
(Born; April 30, 1952) Age; 25 years, 10 months
Height; 6' 0"
Reach; 73"
Record 22-3-1 {18 KO's}
Hard to say if this was each fighters peak though.
John had not fought in 11-months, since March 1977 {KO 3 over Len Hutchins}, and had been
'stripped' of the WBC Championship in May 1977.
John may have been at his best in October 1976 (Age; 25 years, 4 months) when he defeated
Alvaro 'Yaqui' Lopez with one hand {Left Jab}.
Eddie was coming off a 'controversial' 15-Round Decision Loss to Victor Galindez {November 20, 1977},
in a bout he should have won.
Eddie hit his 'peak' in early 1980 {Age; 28}
How I see it also. Two talents who never quite maximized their potential.Il Duce wrote:Mr. Rover,

At that period, 'King Carlos' was a tremendous boxer-mover, with a precision left jab,
and one who could deliver a good one-two.
'The Flame' in {1980} was a tremendous puncher, who could really hurt you with
'one-punch'.
I could see John building up an early Points lead thru 5 Rounds, then getting rocked
a few times by Eddie, even possibly going down somewhere between Rounds 6 and 9.
But, 'King Carlos' had the better overall boxing skills, and probably would have collected
himself, and gone to a 'tactical plan' of jabbing and moving for the last 'third' of the bout
to edge out a close 15-Round Decision.
