Is Barry McGuigan selfish?Carl Frampton split with matchroom

Carl Frampton has just split with Eddie Hearn because Barry McGuigan wanted to be joint promotional partners with Eddie and was turned down. Has Barry's greediness just ruined Carl's career? Should Carl leave Barry?

It increases the chances of us all seeing him in the fight we want to see him in, which could/should forward his career dramatically if he wins it. Wonder if Frank was prepared to be a joint-promoter of Carl?

I think what this has shown more than anything is how much Frampton is with McGuigan.

It does seem greedy from McGuigan, I don't see how him co-promoting is going to help Frampton's career, and Matchroom is surely the best place for Frampton(the boxer, not to be mistaken with team Frampton) to be.

I can't help but feel that somewhere along the line it's going to hit problems and this is all going to go wrong, but I genuinely hope the W@arren/McGuigan partnership takes him to the next level. They had better.

Does it? Because Hearn hasn't hidden the fact he wanted the Quigg fight, I can't help feeling that McGuigan doesn't (Hearn mentioned that McGuigan was looking at potential world title routes instead). I think there is a pretty high chance that the fight was MUCH more likely to happen under Hearn.

Lots of promoters talk about other promoters fighters they'd like to square theirs off against, but the problems start when it comes down to whose card they're going to fight on and which TV channel the fight will be aired on, so the fact they're in the same camp removes both of those BIG obstacles.

I don't share your scepticsm that Allegedly won't want to put them in the ring together, maybe they'll have another warm-up or 2 first though

Hearn was supposedly happy to be co-promoter with Dave Coldwell and Frank Maloney, when he offered David Price, what's the problem here?

Two sides to every story and it is probably something to do with money and dates being offered by Hearn, who has a lot of boxers to keep happy

Why wouldn't Hatton have wanted it to be on Sky? I'd have thought he would have jumped at the coverage, I don't see the problem, there was money to be made for both sides and a far larger audience.

Not Allegedly, McGuigan. Hearn said in his last interview McGuigan was looking at other routes for Frampton (opponent wise).

Barry McGuigan and Barney Eastwood could be happening all over again with Barry being on the other side of the fence.....

At the end of the day though it shows Frampton is loyal to Mcguigan and wanted to stay with him. Im sure he could of jumped ship.

Mc Guigan is selfish, he is not doing what is right for his fighter. Mc Guigan has no stable and to make matters worse there is so few decent fighters from Ireland and Hearn has one of them that can draw in Belfast, in Mc Closkey.

Also, with Warren the WBO belt is not an option at all for Frampton. Rigondeaux is champ and Frampton gets beaten for 12 rounds. Such a terrible move. Frampton should leave Mc Guigan.

They want three fights BEFORE a world title fight.

So they will cream the Belfast crowd for 12-15 months one assumes.

I know, they obviously see him as their cash cow. Fair enough really, Frampton doesn't seem to mind.

Interesting about how it doesn't appear to be Frank even co-promoting him. Just a deal to showcase him on allegedly.

it was a bit of shock to read it this morning... .. it seems as though mcGiugan doesn not want to relinquish any control over frampton... hearn is the main promoter at the moment and gets the big fights.. think Frampton is just being loyal with Mcquigan... i really hope frampton careers doesnt end up like cleverly's

Reading this thread one would assume McGuigan has invested no time or money in Frampton, which is clearly not the case. I have to say, I'm normally good at finding something to dislike in everybody but I genuinely don't understand the grief Barry gets on here. I met him once and he was a gentleman. We spoke for half and hour and he gave me insights he shouldn't have that all came true (best one was ITV only wanting Khan and not rest of Franks stable, this was weeks/months before I see it anywhere else).

He was considerate (apologised to the Mrs for stealing me, when I'd actually ambushed him), honest, and an all round top bloke. When he'd finished with me, he got ambushed again and he spoke again like he'd been in isolation for two years. I'd rather Carl stayed with Hearn, but that in itself doesn't neccessarily make Barry wrong, we do not have the whole picture.

One interesting point is that W@rren has said he's looking to get Carl 3 fights in Belfast after the 20/7 before a world title fight next year. So that would be 3 cards put on in Belfast between, say, September and April. Off the top of my head, I can only recall 2 or 3 cards W@rren has actually put on this year so far (cleverly v Krasniqi, Gavin v welborn.....), so is it realistic that we will see Carl fighting 3-4 times by this time next year?

True - however, just like Barney Eastwood invested a lot (more ?) money and time into Barry's career as soon as he got to the top and started earning the good money he quite literally said "thank you very very much Mr Eastwood" and jibbed him off and started paying family members a percentage of his purse rather than an outsider (just like Naz, Hatton did a few years later).

The whole manager/promoter thing is a red herring - FW and Matchroom do this all the time with their boxers, acting in both capacities.

I reckon Barry wanted to take a bit of Eddie's slice of the cake and what with the price of hair gel and fake tan these days, Eddie couldn't be having that.

Barry was my first boxing hero, but I reckon behind that cheeky chappy persona he is just as sly as the rest of 'em when it comes to money and looking after number one.

Poor move for Frampton! Very hard to make a reasoned judgement on the split as we don't know the surroundings - as with most things it's probably six of one and half a dozen of the other.

But you can't help but feel that, ultimately, Frampton's career is/was best served (like virtually all British boxers to be honest) by fighting on Sky Sports, and therefore with Matchroom. Hard to see how his career develops from here. Even if he gets a Quigg fight, if it's on a tiny subscription channel his profile won't get bigger. It's not just about fighting for world titles etc., it's also about growing and marketing yourself.

A present example is Jamie McDonnell. He may be an IBF champion but he'll be known by a lot less of the general public than any major Matchroom fighter (Brook, Bellew, Frampton). And that means less ££££ in the long run.

Barry McGuigan also has a lot to answer for. Why does he want to expand his role in Frampton's career to manager/promoter? I can't see how, as a manager, he can be upset with Matchroom as they seem to have been doing a great job. It's widely agreed that they are good to fighters and pay well and on time, so I don't think he can be legitimately upset with Carl's pay. From the outside looking in, it smacks of autocracy and greed.

I think people on here seem quite naive about Sky.
Hearn only has what dates he agreed with Sky when the deal started and he only has the money Sky were willing to cough up then. Now he has many more fighters - notably guys like Ricky Burns, David Haye and Groves - so Frampton has been told he might get 1, maybe 2 headline fights a year. Apart from that, he can box on undercards (indeed the shows Ricky Burns is being offered could well be the ones Frampton was told he was getting).
The rumour I heard was that he was offered a spot on the Campbell show in Hull (third on the bill to Campbell and Kell Brook) for what I can only imagine is a fraction of the money he would have made topping a bill in Belfast.
He is not in any mandatory position for a world title, so unless they want to give away options, they have to go down the eliminator route anyway.

I agree... About the sky sports bit...

But I wonder, if as a consequence of Sky's exclusive boxing deal with Matchroom it has given Matchroom too much of an upper hand so that they now feel that they can dictate all of the terms to a fighter? In which case, McGuigan may feel that Frampton is worth more than what Matchroom are prepared to give him.... Just a thought.
