did Enzo Maccarinelli have the worst matchmaker ever

i was looking over enzo's record and i had forgotten that after getting blasted out by haye two of his next three fight was against lebadov and ola afolabi in which enzo got ko'd in each fight .
now we all know enzo's chin makes amir khans look like the hulk but that was some tough match making by fr@nk w@rren ,
if enzo had had a few softer fights after haye he might of got a bit of confidence back rather than being a KO waiting to happenas he is now.

It is crazy that almost everyone he's faced since Haye (with the exception of his gimmes) have been heavy hitters. Almost like they don't like the guy!

Ola wasn't that well known when he fought Enzo and was expected to beat him. To be fair he was winning until he got caught.

I don't think the match making has been too bad as Enzo was coming from a unification fight with Haye so for him to go and fight journeyman wouldn't make sense back in 2008/9.

Unfortunately now, he is now fighting journeyman which is the sad side of his career.

I dont think it was a case of poor matchmaking although it looks like it on the surface. FW and Powell know that the public have this perception of Enzo being chinny so I think by putting them in with these guys it was a chance to put that to bed! Admittedly it didnt work lol but that was the plan I think. Also these guys were prospects on the way up so beating them would of given Enzo a big career boost after losing to Haye and what have you.

Ps Afolabi wasnt noted as a puncher going into that fight and even now he doesnt knock out many top guys.

It was reported that the time that Enzo had requested the tougher opponents. He wanted to prove himself. Courageous, but naïve.

Well it was probably that then! I like that about Enzo though. I like any boxer who's willing to fight the toughest competition regardless of the threat that is to one's career. It's silly I agree for the fighter but as a fan thats what you want to see.

nobody's mentioned the Frenkel KO yet... ironically i don't think it was much more than a couple of minutes before the knockout that I mention to a mate that I thought Enzo's boxing was better-controlled than I had ever seen from him.....

No, he didn't have a bad matchmaker, he just had a terrible chin and was in a heavy division with lots of big hitters. He was always going to be up against it.

Enzo should retire as he is a shell of the fighter he was IMO

He had a very nasty run of ko's, enough for any man.

I thought he was winning clearly against Ola but my memory may be wrong here (only watched it on the night) but I remember ola looking for the big shot and not doing much and then........

Lebedev dominated him (again not seen the fight since that night)

Frenkel was a sick KO!!!! He was competitive however prior to stoppage was he not?

Maybe the 1st round blowout for the EBU in russia was a bad thing for enzo!

:TU:

Of all the nights I've felt sympathy for Enzo, I think that one was the worst. He was boxing better and looked focused as if he knew it would be coming, but when it did.... :(

There's a frenkel ko before the enzo one where he lays out some guy with a brutal left hook. It's painful viewing.

What the hell happened to him since then anyway?

He was matched soft early on his career though. Remember the WBU title defences on SKY?? Rich LaMontagne, my god that dude was shot even walking into the ring.

Worrying thing is that was almost 2 years ago...

There was a rumour that that he liked his partying, fell in with a bad crowd and was sick of the gym. Some stories were coming out that he was sparring Huck and beating 7 shades out of him so Wegner refused to let them in the ring together, another story was that he'd gone off the rails...real shame if he doesn't come back sooner rather than later.

Don't think it's fair to lay all the blame at Dean's door, but I can't help thinking this wouldn't have happened under Ernie Fossey's watch - bless him, great guy.

He had the Best matchmaker ever in the first 25 odd fights of his career....... that's the only reason he's still being discussed. Allegedly got him to a level he would never have reached without his matchmaking.

I believe it was Enzo who pushed for the constant tough fights in the latter part of his career

At the same time, how often does allegedly get accused of cherry picking opponents for his fighters? Also, how man times do we criticise fighters for not fighting tough opposition?

Bit difficult to then complain when the opposite is true.

I heard he fell into a bad depression and has retired, Sauerland even says in that article that he was having trouble dealing with the pressures of boxing, seems to be a sensitive guy and I've seen that kind of thing happen before to people prone to depression

Frenkel was no great shakes, but boy he had power and could have been fun if he'd kept going. Maybe he was scared of his own power, maybe he didn't get much pleasure out of sparking people out and watching them brutalised on the canvas in front of him? Who knows? He certainly didn't look overly enthralled when he beat Enzo, to say he'd just won the European title.
