WBC super-middleweight champion Markus Beyer will make a voluntary defence in Germany on June 5. Beyer was expected to face Australian Danny Green in a WBC-mandated rematch, but Green was forced to withdraw after suffering exhaustion in his recent win over Sean Sullivan in Australia.
Italy's Cristian Sanavia is the new opponent for Beyer: the WBC granted him permission a few hours ago and the clash is now signed and sealed. Sanavia, the current WBC number two middleweight was expected to face WBC number one middleweight Howard Eastman in a final eliminator for the right to meet Bernard Hopkins - but jumped at the opportunity to challenge Beyer a weight up.
Where does this leave Eastman?

Eastman always seems to lose out at the last moment.

I bet in private moments he kicks himself when thinking of the Joppy fight and how close he came to winning a 'World' title.

What, so was Eastman not offered the opportunity first? Seems somewhat unfair. How does Sanavia legitimately "leapfrog" him exactly?

Surely Eastman's now either WBC mandatory or he boxes off against number three - which I think is Jermain Taylor...

Oh I understand why Beyer wants Sanavia not Eastman, but I mean ..how can it be legitimately made? If as is seemingly the case, ANYONE can fight ANYONE it makes a mockery of the whole rankings system.

Why f**king bother with ranking at all? Seemingly champions pick and choose who they fight...

Because compared to the WBA (Super Champions!) IBF (well we all know about them) and WBO (remember - "oh please Mr Bowe Sir, will you be our champion - Bowe: "No, Have your belt back" - WBO "No, No Sir you keep it")

WBC still sounds is still probably the best.

Let me get my boxing History right here - it was the WBC that was created 30 odd years ago. Its the WBA that is the first belt, so why has the WBC leapfrogged them as the #1 belt is beyond me.

I recall that Henry Cooper was refused a chance to fight Ellis for the WC title (by the BBBoC) because the BBBoC didn't accept the belt and would refuse to sanction any home title defences.

HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGE (they'll sanction anything now).

While i question Eastman's tactics in the Joppy fight and agree he should have made more of his chance i also see many far less deserving fighters than Howard getting numerous "title" shots. In a division so devoid of charisma and natural talent a guy like Eastman should be up there with the rest challenging for the world crowns. It stinks.

I disagree somewhat, just who has Eastman beaten to warrant such high praise. He is the reigning European champion, but so was Morrade Haakar (probably the guy your thinking off). Robert Allen is a fighter who actually looked like he deserved to be in the same ring as Hopkins when they have fought - and has been in impresive form.

I don't know who exactly are getting these "numerous" world title shots. Robert Allen is the only guy I can think off. Daniels had one chance, so did Haakar and so did the vast majority of Hopkins' opponents.

Eastman's number 1 status is a little lofty if you ask me, I think fighters like Aaron Mitchell are as deserving.

I didn't mean fighters solely in the Middleweight division Stu but across the board, perhaps Howard has not set the world alight lately but talent wise he deserves another chance and it is a shame the Sanavia fight has not materialised as he would have beaten the plodding Italian IMO.
