Whats the idea behind this if anyone can enlighten me ?

Ive seen a show in Leeds last week had a couple of WBU title bouts on it .

Not just a made up fictional belt , its the actual WBU formerly held by the likes of Ricky Hatton .

They are a pro title and i understand the BBBoC do not recognise them any more , but how can they be on pro shows in most countries but be on unlicensed shows here , i cant see how that would work , are foreign pros coming over and defending against Brit unlicensed guys etc .

Im not sure if its a good thing for unlicensed shows in gaining credibility for the promoter and the boxers boxing for the title , or if its a bit dodgy that seasoned pros could be coming and bashing our novice guys .

There are 2 WBU organisations now, one owned by Moose Lewis (think that's his name) the other owned by I believe a German company - from what I've seen it's the German organisation sanctioning the belt for unlicensed shows. Seems a strange move, but ultimately they just want to get paid and have no morals so shouldn't expect anything less. Not sure how international title defences could work though when one boxer is a licensed pro.
One thing for is for sure though, if either WBU ever had a chance of being recognised by the BBBofC, they can forget it now.

From what I understand the original WBU was for sale for quite a long time with lots of offers being rejected.

Boll ocks Shea Neary won it and defended it against Micky Ward so in my opinion was a credible belt.Derry Mathews also won the version.It gets on my t i ts how people who have never been in the game make silly statements like above poster.I and many many other boxers would of sold there mothers for this type of tittle.

The WBU belt like others out there, is only as good as its champion/the people who fight for it.

The only world title I recognise is the WBF.

Ive never been in the game, and i might be very wrong, but i wouldve rather won lonsdale belt outright than the wbu strap.

Personally never saw it as credible belt, just the chance to bill an event as "world championship boxing".

The fights in Leeds were for 'WBU SEMI Professional' titles.

Your mother deserves better. Shea Neary won it two fights after an area title. If you want that type of title, fair enough, but it's nowhere near a world title. Let's face it, the original three already devalued the idea of a world value massively, and then the WBO, and then the IBO, and the WBU. How many before it becomes a total piss take?

It was such a sought after title that the most successful WBU 'tittle' holder Hatton ditched it for the IBF first chance he got.

I think the reason is that the BBBofC stop recognising it as a title a few years ago with the WBF.

Who gives a fuck if you're involved in the game or not? If you promote a fight for a worthless strap such as the WBU and bill it as world championship boxing, you're on some level defrauding the public - if not in law (possibly this falls under misrepresentation, but I doubt there are any settled cases on this) then in principle. If you call yourself a world champion having won a worthless WBU-esque strap, you're bullshitting people.

The fact that this is widely done 'in the game' is irrelevant to whether it's total bullshít or not; unlike journeymen, these pretend titles are not necessary to putting on shows

Worst example was when a certain promotional firm would sell a ticket for a very well known and popular fighter but when your ticket arrived it simply said "world championship boxing". On at least one occassion the headliner got injured but you couldnt get your money back as another boxer, at another weight, would all of a sudden get a shot at the vacant WBU title. Hence the promotion and event would remain as "world championship boxing" and as thus not eligable for refund.

& many more I thought it was a pretty decent organisation

There are two WBU's one is simply called WBU and the Germany based one called WBU-V

Michael Hunter beat Frankie De Milo for a WBF title. Michael said as far as the people of Hartlepool were concerned (a bit deprived of sporting success I think he meant) - that was a World title fight.
I can see what he was getting at, as a poster above alluded to - it's as good as the fighters that fight for it. It was a great fight and the joint was rocking.

Hartlepools greatest achievement before Hunter came along was hanging a French monkey, that WBF belt is still something the locals are probably still very, very proud of!

Remember when Audley beat Richel Hersisa, and then had a reign with it? And Evander Holyfield had it when he was 150 years old?

I'm going to go check who the champ is at the moment.

It's the mighty Carlos Takam from Cameroon, apparently.

Audley held a different WBF belt. Not as prestigious as the one Holyfield held.
