Looks like Maccarinelli is in line for an EBU light heavyweight shot.

Thoughts? Not sure how he has manouvered himself into this position...

I didn't even realise Enzo was still boxing.

I suppose his name is still decent enough and I'm sure his promoter will have helped get him into a position to fight for the title one way or another. It's not uncommon for a promoter to give step aside money so their fighter can box for the title.

This is for the EU title, not the EBU title.

The title is better than people give it credit for. Historically if you can win that title and defend it twice you will end up ranked highly enough in Europe to be mandatory for the European title.

There's a whole world of difference between EBU and EU titles.
The EU holder is 99% guaranteed an EBU number 5 ranking.
In other words not enough to get a shot at the EBU.
The EU title has been vacant for over 9 months in five weight catagories.
Might be a nice title to hold but springboard ?

It is a good springboard, plenty of EU champions get an EBU shot soon afterwards.

Current champions Marcos Nader, Ruben Nieto, Brunet Zamora, Anthony Settoul and of course Richard Towers.
If it's such a good springboard why so many vacant, and who knows much about any of the current champs ?

I can't think of any that have been genuine mandatories.

Cruiserweight title vacated by Haapoja who fought for the EBU title in his next fight.

Super middleweight title vacated by Rebrasse who fought for the EBU title in his next fight.

Featherweight title is not vacant, it is held by Takoucht.

EU champions fight for the EBU title on a regular basis. Do you disagree with that?

There is nothing wrong with the example I gave you.

Towers hasn't got a shot at the EBU or anything else because he's undeserving. He's not good enough to fight the the British, never mind the European.

So you agree the EU title isn't worth a deal if you feel how you do about Towers ?

Parson you are looking quite funny in this thread. You ask someone to name you a fighter who won the EU title and then got an immediate crack at the EBU belt. Horse did this and immediately you move the goalposts as if it doesn't count. I'll name you another then straight off the top of my head without even having to check his record. Michael Sprott. Won over in Germany against Cengiz Koc and got a shot in his next fight at Paolo Vidoz. I suppose that doesn't count either because there was 6 months between both fights, or what excuse are you gonna come up with for that one. If you give me a while to research I'll be able to find you plenty of EU belt holders who got shots straight afterwards, but that's not the point me and Horse are trying to make.

It is a springboard to getting rated by the EBU. You say yourself if you win the EU then you get rated top5. I don't think there's any hard and fast rule that this is the case but none the less EU champs get ranked well. And if you defend the belt a few times then you will eventually be ranked very highly and be in with a shot of being mandatory. Not all countries have National titles that hold the same kind of clout that we do here in Britain so this belt gives fighters from those countries the chance to get a high ranking if they deserve it. The Lonsdale belt is well regarded, but using your argument it wouldn't be would it, because we could just say 'ohhhhhh name me some boxers who won the British belt and then fought for the European in their next fight.'

So to be clear, the EU title if you can get hold of it is a good way of moving yourself towards a shot at the European title.

I don't really have an opinion on the EU title, don't have the knowledge on it to contribute. My feeling is that Towers is one of those who get a crack at a title despite being undeserving.

WBC international and WBO inter continentals etc are often lightly regarded too but plenty of fighters get shots off them.
Normally because it makes you eligible for a voluntary defense.
