How do you think that would have gone. I dont think Fury would have stopped Bugner

Bugner was in a different class to Fury, how can you compare a guy who went the distance in competitive fights with Ali, Frazier, Lyle to Fury???..... I actually like Tyson but he'd be lucky to go the distance with Bugner......

Probably Fury could edge the decision over 12. He is the bigger man and in all likelihood is the fitter man.

No way Fury gets this by knockout; he's no Earnie Shavers. Also fitter? Bugner fought 15 hard rounds against Ali (don't be looking at the Bugner of the Bruno fight), whereas Fury can't go more than 4 without blowing. Fury's size advantage would make a big difference, and he's starting to know how to use it in terms of leaning on, but he still has no idea how to use his reach advantage. Comfortable, boring points win for Bugner.

Bugner was very passive at a high level. He really wasn't a hitter and relied on his jab to win fights. He struggled to make much impression in either Ali fight. However he was durable. Edge to Fury.

The reason I mentioned this 'fight' was because I do not think Fury would have knocked out Bugner, but nor do I think Bugner would have knocked out Fury.

He was passive against Ali and Frazier, fighters who most people have in their top 10 all time heavies, as opposed to against Fury, who got his bell rung bad by a washed up cruiserweight. A prime Bugner was 6'4, 230 odd pounds, and good enough to beat Jimmy Ellis and take Ron Lyle to a split decision. What is it about Fury's career so far that makes you think he can win? The knockdowns against Pejic and Cunningham? Blowing like a steam train and getting a gift decision against McDermott? 12 plodding rounds against an out of shape Kingpin? I'm not really seeing it.

I agree, Fury doesn't punch hard enough to have stopped Bugner.

I'd take Bugner on points for this one.

Bugner is a league above Fury, as he proved by holding his old in the golden age of the HW division.

Nobody would have heard of Tyson Fury had he fought in the 1970s.

If you gave me a hundred nicker and said put it one or the other, I'd put it on Bugner.

That said, the amount of times I watched Bugner and thought 'Does he actually know how big he is?'

He was such a big and well-proportioned heavyweight Bugner (rather than the Fury/Price-shaped heavyweight that kind of looks like Tony Galento's body stuck on top of Tommy Hearns legs) yet SO often you were disappointed with a performance and felt he could have done more if only the will and desire had been there.

When the press started to give him down the banks, I started to believe he was doing it (ie: not much) on purpose to spite them and wind them up.

The only time I can really remember him cutting loose was against Richard Dunne.

That's one I REALLY remember...well, sort of.

I got all set to listen to it with my dad and my (late) brother and just before the bell, I went for a slash.

By the time I got back to the kitchen it was over - Dunne poleaxed.

An odd and in his own way interesting human being Bugner.

Mind you so Is Fury I suppose.

Exactly. Fury is also shockingly bad. Big heart, decent punch, no skills, not much sign of a chin. I take it you've watched some of his fights?

His finish vs Winston Allen is on YouTube and is well worth a watch. Bugner plods along with no real urgency, then Allen smacks him whilst the ref is pulling them apart....

Assuming we're talking about both at their best, then nobody should judge this unless they've watched Bugner against Frazier.

It goes without saying Fury has already achieved far more than Bodell, who would not have been able to outbox Kevin Johnson for example.

Fury is a complete novice in terms of fights who has not yet got anywhere near his peak, we all forget he's only 24 odd, with limited to no senior amateur experience hes younger by 4/5 years than any of the other top 20 HWs. Bugnar didnt, i dont think, fight for british title until he'd had 30 odd fights!

Also, bugnar had a size advantage over many standing at 6ft 3 and weighing circa 210. Fury is nearer 6ft 8 weighing 245 odd - almost 3st heavier.

Flip side, if cunningham can put him on the seat of his pants the hungarian born british-australian heavyweight could deffo do the same!

Fury hasn't achieved anything yet, has he? He even ducked out if fighting for the British title.....
