I really liked Derek Williams back in the day, but you only got to see what TV showed, so I was very reliant on Boxing News. Watching back what's on Youtube, he looked like a monster on his night. Nobody else did Hughroy Currie over like him, wrecked Jimmy Thunder when his stock was still high, and really looked like he had it all. He could box, had decent feet, and clearly could hit very hard.

What went wrong? How did he conspire to lose against Jean Chanet, who didn't have anything but heart? And how come the wheels came off so badly after the Lewis loss (where I recollect he acquitted himself reasonably til he got caught).

How many Derek Williams treads do we need?

I made one in here because I don't think people in British and Irish know the answers. So we need one, but it needs to be this one ;)

I think Williams problems were like Harrison, all mental. If he didn't blow a guy out he quickly seemed to lose focus and self belief. Often he just wouldn't fight.

He did stay on his feet through 10 with Bert Cooper though, and not many Brits today could do that.

Why not ask him?

I liked 'Sweet D' as well. If I remember rightly, he was always really good in the first round.

He had Angelo Dundee in his corner for the Lennox Lewis fight.

This was my first betting fight. I predicted the round and have a fiver on it. If I remember rightly without double browsing to his record Lennox stopped him in 2 rounds. I knew he couldnt last any longer than 2. I have never been to a bookies and predicted another winner by which round since.

I only ever saw Williams in the Brawl for it All heavyweight tournament in December 93. Dropped Ribalta in the first and lost the next two rounds. (It was a 3 round match as were all in the tournament.) Williams lost by SD. The tiebreaking judge (Chester Comeau) voted for Ribalta on styles--whatever that means.
He looked like he could punch but once Ribalta got up Williams really didn't do much else.

That's exactly what happened in the Ribalta fight.
