People after forget, too, that well over 500,000 romany travellers went to the prison camps alongside Jews and others who were deemed undesirables by the Nazi party. I was wondering if BoxRec had a complete list of people who went who were boxers. The man I posted was a German gypsy who died in one such camp. Jesus bless.

It was still a powerful movie when I saw it on DVD a few years ago.
Must have really had an impact in 1965.

Victor "Young" Perez, the NBA Flyweight champion of the 1930's was sent to Auschwitz.

Here are some I know of :
Kid Francis (Francesco Buonagorio) died in Aushwitz 1943
Leone Efrati died at Aushwitz in 1944
Harry (Herschel) Haft was inmate in different camps
Young (Victor) Perez shot dead while SS evacuated Aushwitz 1945
It was rumored that Settimo Terracina was also an inmate. Fate unknown.

Kid Francis, Leone Efrati and Terracina were Italian Jews, Perez a Tunisian jew, and Haft an Austrian Jew.

Both Leen Sanders and his brother Bram 'Battling" Sanders of the Netherlands went to Auschwitz. Leen survived, his brother did not.

I remember reading an article a while back about death fights, I can't be bothered to Google it but one guy reportedly had a record of 200 or more fights/wins.

That was the amateur boxer which the film Triumph of The Spirit was made. His first name was Salamo, I remember that much.

I think if BoxRec doesn't have the category apart of its Encyclopedia feature on the site, it needs to start one up. Some of the best boxers the world has ever known were victims of politics and the savagery of war. It is something we as a people, the human race, must never forget. It effected every aspect of the world.

I was under the impression that Young Perez's fate was officially unknown. Has this been determined?

Most of the jewish sites and blogs relating to the holocaust and Aushwitz that I searched that mentioned Young Perez claimed there were reports from eye witnesses that he was shot and killed during the "death march" when the camp was evacuated. One Jewish blog even reported the events that led to his demise. I believe the date they claimed was Feb. 2nd 1945 and as the group stopped near a house, Perez was caught sneaking off into the kitchen of the house to steal bread and an SS guard shot and killed him. One of His wikipedia profiles claims he was an Aushwitz inmate but has no information of his fate and makes no mention of how he died. Another wikipedia profile claims he was shot and killed in January 1945.

I raise my glass to these men and by extention all those who were imprisoned by the obscene regime that pops its ugly head out from its place in the pig sty of humanity from time to time. we will never let the world forget
