Floyd should be fighting Canelo in 2 years time

He hasn't got a prayer of beating Floyd in September, they should have held this fight off for another couple of years when Floyd has slipped a bit and Canelo has matured.

Thats how you make new stars, by beating the old stars, not by having the soon to be retired stars beating up and comers before they are ready.

They are wasting a massive opportunity by rushing Canelo into this fight.

Anyway.

Floyd calls the shots and this is why he is taking the fight now.

Nope, Showtime call the shots and the last fight did not do good numbers.

hence the panic

they're wasting the opportunity by going with the catchweight. Why does Floyd get to face a lesser version that Trout and Sugar Shane faced? A full strength Canelo is too heavy handed for Floyd to cope with. With the catchweight, if he rides an early storm he'll have too much in the tank for a drained Canelo.

Do you work for FW promotions by any chance?

Agreed... for me he has cherry picked throughout his career, albeit at the top level, but on this occassion, its the first time in his career i can recal him taking on the best possible oponent out there come fight night. Right now that is definately Canelo

Who's slagging him off?

Ill try and spell it out for you.

Canelo has the potential to be the next De La Hoya, one of the biggest stars in the history of boxing, why chuck him in with Floyd now? he's going to get beat. Fighters retiring undefeated does nothing for the long term interests of the sport. If Canelo can be the guy who sends Floyd packing into retirement, he will be a mega star.

Look at Hatton and Tszyu. They held off making that fight until Tszyu was on the way down and Hatton became a megastar by beating him.
What would have happened to Hattons career if Tszyu beat him 2 years earlier?

Think man, think

This fight should be built up for a couple of years for 2 reasons.

1) Make it a real event like Floyd - Manny would have been, the big fights need a long slow build, a 2 year collision course

2) Let Canelo mature and improve to give him a better chance of winning.

canelo has had 40 odd fights. mike tyson was world champ at 20. mayweather is definately not getting younger. hatton was never that great anyway. carefully picked opponents etc.
if canelo has it in his makeup to be a great, now is the time to step up and shine. if he gets beat , he should learn the lessons and come back stronger and beat him two years down the line. in my opinion mayweather is not as good as hes made out to be. looking good against cherry picked fighters just shows hes been astutely managed. sooner or later they all make mistakes.
watching canelo beat trout convinced me that he has an old enough head on young shoulders to be prepared for what mayweather might bring. i think canelo had plenty left in the tank at the end of that fight . mayweather might just provide a tough enough test to bring out the best in him.

I see this as a easy night for Floyd. In my eyes money may is by far the best out there and i think will win by a wide decision. I think Canelo is overrated, he didnt look spectacular against Mosley won a close fight against trout Beat up a good game fighter in Lopez. His last 7 fights he has only faced 1 live opponent in Trout, Mosley was 40 years of age and was only in there for Canelo to have his name on his record

Canelo isn't going to be a Mayweather type star. Keep him away from Floyd for two years and he could well have lost in that timeframe, assuming he sought out challenges.

Very good fighter but he isn't anything overly special.

Are we seriously saying 35 year old Mayweather is too young here?

I read the thread and you're saying Canelo should fight Mayweather as a withered old man and prove nothing, which is what's wrong with boxing. Thank God you're not part of any organisation.

How about the best fight the best now and don't keep the fans waiting? Mayweather is way past him prime and still kicking arse. If Canelo can't beat him at 35 then he doesn't deserve to 'knock him off his throne'

I don't think Canelo will beat Mayweather but he will certainly pose a lot of problems and I can imagine Floyd getting bashed around a bit from time to time. It is a very good bout and if they hung around for a couple of years one or the other may lose and the bout be redundant. Alverez has some very smart moves and isn't just a bustler; he has lots going for him. Mayweather is very smart and makes adjustments well; I'm glad they are boxing now, it may be that good that a rematch is demanded.

hence the panic
Not true, Floyd would not fight him if he didn't want to, showtime ask nicely, Floyd can walk out of any contract when he chooses to

Obviously Showtime can't physically force him to fight anyone but the amount they are paying him means that they have a lot more control than you might think.

Floyd can walk out of his contract, sure. But won't be able to fight again for another 3 years.

If Mayweather wins as expected but Canelo gives it a real good go as expected it would set up a lucrative re-match in a few years anyway it's no-brainer.

I'm looking forward to it of course but I think Floyd is taking him to school

The last fight did something like half the buys Showtime expected and they lost money on the fight.
I think this fight is a reaction to that as it will certainly be big, just not as big as it would have been in 1 years.

It is a bout that they could rematch; Alvarez will push very hard and keep on trying; there's too much can happen to louse up a big bout by building too long - Gamboa v Lopez and Manny v Floyd come to mind immediately.
