Everybody wanted a piece of the WBC {John Stracey} or WBA {Angel Espada} Champions.
The WBA Champion eventually signed {February 22, 1976} to face #3 WBA-ranked Shoji Tsujimoto
{Japanese Welterweight Champion} in early-April 1976 for a bout to held in Japan.
But Angel Espada injured his hand in training camp, and the bout was supposed to be pushed back
3-Weeks until the end of April.
Confused as to why Weston is included as a highly regarded West Coast welterweight??? I always considered him strictly an East Coast guy.
He had a few fights in California, most notably his title stoppage defeat against Pipino Cuevas, but he pretty much cut his teeth in New York.

Harold Weston and Hedgemon Lewis fought to a 10-Round Draw in December 1975 in New York.
Thanx for clearing that up. Please continue with a retrospective on the Hawk.

Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas vs. Andy 'The Hawk' Price
Has anybody seen portions of this bout, or have a detailed account.
I have found one report that said it was a 10-Round Split-Decision win for Andy Price.
Andy used his fast-footwork and snappy left jabs to build up a solid points lead thru 4-Rounds, as
the 18 year-old Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas' was at the end of Andy's fast punches throughout the first
few Rounds of the bout.
'Pipino' started his charge in Round 5, as he was able to close the distance and started to land some
whipping left-hooks during in-close exchanges.
The best action took place in Rounds 8 and 9, as both went 'toe-to-toe' trading bombs.
The Scorecards were supposedly;
* 6-4-0 {Andy Price}
* 5-4-1 {Pipino Cuevas}
* 5-4-1 {Andy Price]
The fights in California were/are not score by rounds
By the way I watched that fight lived, Andy just out boxed the hell out of the wild swinging Pipino

I believe you are correct.
In 1976, California changed to the 10-Point 'Must' System.
In 1975 they were using a Rounds System with 'supplemental points'.

Andy 'The Hawk' Price got to test another hard-hitting Mexican Welterweight in Jose Baquedano.
In the meantime, Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas' got the chance and 'upset' WBA Welterweight Champion -
Angel Espdada by a {TKO 2} on July 17, 1976 in a Bull-Ring in Mexicali.
I been watching fights in California for 65 years and I don't recall Calif ever using the rounds system with supplemental points. Different point systems have been used though

Here's 'two' famous California bouts using the Round System.
Ken Norton vs. Muhammad Ali I --- {1973}
Ken Norton vs. Muhammad Ali II -- {1973}
They were not scored by the round system, in the early '70s Calif. was using the five point systems, one or more points to the winner of the round the loser getting more. Even rounds no points were given to either fighter...It was a lousy system that didn't worked out too good...It didn't last. The state went back to what it was using before, the ten point must system
"referee: Frank Rustich 7-4 | judge: Hal Rickards 5-4 | judge: Fred Hayes 5-6
NABF heavyweight title
Ali suffered a broken jaw during this bout."
Check the numbers, none add-up to 12 rounds
In the early '50s even fractions were used. Check below
1953-01-29 Art Aragon 144¾ vs Billy Graham 147 98-10-8
Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA L UD 10 10
referee: Joe Stone 54½-55½ | judge: Frankie Van 53-57 | judge: Mushy Callahan 54-56
Some time in the mid to late '50s the state went to the ten point must system, then it went to the five points, when that didn't work it went back to the ten point system. What a mess it was!!!

In the late '40s to the late '50s a point system was used that involved fractions, say Boxer A had 56 1/2 points to boxer B 55 points, that system was thrown out in the late '50s and was replace with the ten point must system, where the winner of a round got 10 point and the loser 9 or less. that system is widely used now days. But in the mid-'60s California did away with that system and started using the 5 point system "the simplified5" where the winner of a round got 1 or more points, no more than 5 points, the loser got dick, in 1976 or around there California went back to the 10 point must system as the 5 point system proved to be a total failure

Il Duce wrote:So the Point/Round Type System was utilized thru 1975 -
And the California Boxing Commission implemented the 10-Point Must system in 1976.
Does that sound correct....
In my life time it was the:
Fraction system
The 10 must
The simplified 5
And then back to the
10 must system in 1976

I don't remember if it was a UD or SD

Il Duce--
Enjoying your retrospective on the Hawk, who was called the uncrowned welterweight champion of the world, after both Cuevas and Palomino won championships.
An excellent boxer-puncher, who suffered from inconsistency and a sometimes less than reliable chin, but at his best, Andy Price could be a handful for any welter.
