hello kiwis, i was reading an old,1949,american Ring Digest mag. in it they mentioned prospects from around the globe, Russ Broughton was mentioned as a lightheavy prospect but after 9 fights,9wins he dropped off the scene early 1950,s, he came from the Wairarapa area?going on todays standards they may have lined him up with Dave Sands,he may have decided timber cutting was a better option,I would be interested to know what happened,to get a mention in the Ring in those days was something else, all the best

Hi--re--Broughton--he was a opposum trapper--in early 1951,he had either 1 or2 bouts, fall through and as he had been in training qand being self-employed,decided that the lost of income,it was not worthwhile to continue boxing,so retired 25-5-1951.At the end of 1951 he went into training to make a comeback to fight Chub Keith but decided against it.----Cheers-J.D.

hello, thanks for the imformation, apparently he had the potential ,but as you say he made the decision to get a steady income, a lot of fighters have been lost because of cancelled fights after they have lost time at work and money, i saw the Sandsv Chub Keith fight, thanks again for clearing that up for me,do you know anything about a poem on two old champions Charlie Purdy [NZ]v Billy Grime {Aust.] back in the late 20,s early 30,s.all the best
