Akinwande still rolling along

Henry Akinwande scored a tenth-round stoppage over South Africa's Anton Nel on Saturday night in Nigeria.
Akinwande dominated the fight, dropping Nel in round seven and finishing him off at 1:39 of the tenth.
With the win, Akinwande improves to 45-2-1 (29).
The 38-year-old Akinwande, who recently renounced his British citizenship and is fighting as a Nigerian, has won five straight since losing to Oliver McCall in 2001.

The top Heavyweight contenders will still avoid Henry like the plague, but I think he'd struggle with some of the big physical guys like McCline, Golota, Vitali and Ruiz and it would be a snore-fest if he ever fought Byrd.

I'm sure I've seen Anton Nel on Eurosport TV in a kickboxing or K1 fight.

Aren't you confusing Anton Nel with Jan Nortje? I don't think Anton Nel ever fought in K1

I wonder if Akinwande is HIV-positive? Seems strange that he is now basing himself in Nigeria.

I pray not, I just hope Akinwande is doing for the right reasons - while he had British citezenship he was never British (remember the "USA" chants before the Scott Welch fight).
He needed to fight in a boxing country, I would say since Lewis and then McCall any chance of regaining world honours have gone, hopefully he has made enough money - he doesn't need/want to fight in Britain/America now - he's probably in semi retirement.
What happend to Tommy Morrison? I know he's been in trouble and is looking a very ill man now (down to 11 stone), but what happend with his comeback? He fought in Japan and it seemed like that amazingly his license was retained, so why no fights.

Tommy Morrison down to 11 stone! Jesus, one of his legs must have dropped off. Any pics of him?

I have seen some prior to one of his court cases (it was on the cbs sportsline website) I doubt its there now though. Although he stressed he felt good and healthy and was still fighting HIV (not Aids) - he was doing it via alternative medicine's though.

HIV is the virus that causes the medical condition called AIDS. Severe weight loss is one of the classic symptoms of late-stage AIDS.
If Morrison is ignoring the available and proven effective treatments for HIV/AIDS (none of which is a cure, but which can suppress the virus to undetectable levels for years, even decades), he's an idiot.
"Alternative" in this case is a euphemism for "suicidal."

I'll never understand how Tommy Morrison was able to stand up to - and clearly outbox - George Foreman for 12 rounds - yet get blown away in a round by Michael Bentt.

You've said the answer in your sentence Bennie, He outboxed Forman - he got on the back foot used a jab and moved well against a slow, but Hard headed, target.
He went to flattern Bentt like he did for most of his opponent and fight like a White Tyson, but he was well on top and he got tagged.
If he would have fought like that agaist Foreman, he would have got KO'd.
Simple as that.

Could be many things. Probably that he got caught cold, or he took a dive. Neither of which is beyond the realms of possibility.

Ha, coincidentally I just watched both fights in the last few days.
In the Bentt fight, Morrison went all out, looking for an early knockout, and got caught with some good counter punches and from that moment on he was gone.
In the Foreman fight, he was cautious and concentrated for the full 12 rounds, although his mouth was wide open(wlad-style) from the 3rd and on, Morrison somehow catched a second wind and just kept moving around. This was also a very very lacklustre performance by Big George. Even when he had Morrison trapped in the corner it took him (literally) 5 seconds to throw a shot. Foreman's jab wasn't a factor at all in this fight, and was even outjabbed in some rounds by the much shorter Morrison

Last I heard, Morrison was doing OK, there was an interview with him on maxboxing I think it was, and there was nothing about him weighing 11 stone.

Yeah, I think I may be.

I'm sure I read recently somewhere that Tommy was doing ok and was around the 185lbs mark.

Tommy always looked to me like a guy who pumped iron a lot to get his weight up anyway, 185 lbs seems fine, it's not like he was a naturally huge guy.

Well, that sounds a lot better than the initial 11-stone post made it sound. Lets also hope that he's using his homeopathic remedies as an adjunct to the now-conventional antivirals, rather than in their stead. The tricky thing with AIDS is that it can take years, often up to a decade for it to finish breaking down one's immune system - most people's immune systems actually put up a helluva fight, but it's ultimately a losing war - and by the time the real symptoms appear, the specific arm of the immune system that is destroyed by the disease may not be reconstitutable, even with the latest drugs. Starting drugs then is kinda like quitting smoking when your lungs are already shot.

Perhaps he's changed his mind about the medicine's - I hope so. I hope your right, like I said it was some time ago when I read the weight thing.
Anybody know the current state of Magic Johnson.
Incidently, speaking of Foreman vs Morrison I posted some questions about this fight on another site and alot of the very intellectual posters seem to suggest that it might have been that fight that got tampered with (i.e Foreman got paid not to KO Tommy). It was probably George's poorest performance in his comeback, but I can't believe those stories.

Don't believe so either. Foreman didn't hurt Morrison at all in the fight.(at least not visibly). Somewhere in the middle rounds(can't remember exactly), he caught him with a combination, Morrison wasn't really affected and Foreman was definitely not holding back.
One of the commentators gave all but one round to Morrison.
I gave Foreman 2 rounds. What's more likely if you are being bribed(being Big George)? Not even throwing your key punch, the jab during 12 rounds or just failing to finish your opponent?(like against Jimmy Ellis)
I doubt George is the man to act, apart from the cheese-smile.
I agree that it was a very poor performance by George but you can also give Morrison credit for fighting a smart fight.
In the post-fight interview George acted like he didn't really care.
When asked if this was his final fight, he didn't say yes with that much words. He said something like that he might wanted to quit now but that the game of boxing would pull him back
And we all know what happened in Foreman's next fight....
