The domestic lightweight division.

Is this the best division we have had for years in this country. Almost every time the likes of Mathews, Crolla, Rees, Coyle and so on fight each other it seems to be a barnstormer. And now with Kevin Mitchell coming back into the picture we have a load of really good matches and rematches at lightweight.
Discuss.

Yeah amazing division some real cracking fights. But just seen on Twitter Matthews next fight is woodhouse which is a joke fight for me Matthews shouldn't be dusting it with a nobody he should be fighting either corolla again or maybe Mitchell or even Rees at a push but woodhouse it's a joke

But promoters (coldwell) have got to sort out their own & you can't blame him for that either.

Yeah but there both his fighters. Yet with Curtis and Derry fight he's only looking after one and even then I don't think he even looking after one. As for Derry it's a lose lose as if he wins everyone will say he's expected too and then if he loses well I can't see where he could go after losing to Curtis. And for Curtis he ain't gonna win and will probably end his career.

Can't see anything wrong with Mathews v Woodhouse personally, Woodhouse has looked very good at lightweight and has worked his way into the position whereby he was probably going to get one of the 'outsiders' of the division; i.e. Crolla, Rees, Mathews, Mitchell or Coyle; I think it might be a step too far for Curtis but who knows, he's a tough cookie.
Personally I'd be more interested in a matchup with Coyle given their history too but I think Coyle is going on to better things than Curtis' level, with all due respect to him, after tonight's showing.
Definitely a quality division right now though, would like to see Crolla v Mitchell and maybe Rees v Coyle after recent performances.

With respect Curtis that's the best I've seen you box mate, with continued improvement yet you could mix it with the very top domestic boys but I told you that 18 months ago didn't I?

I was very impressed with your patience last night Curtis.. Joe Eilfdh isn't a bum who normally gets bowled over those punches were causing mayhem.. I echo what Billy has said normally I think your boxing is a bit crude but it was tidy last night even quite a lot of head movement.. The Mathews fight is a cracker both big hitters and as Derry proved last night one punch can get you out of jail.. I think Mathews will be a huge favourite but I can see Curtis winning easy money betting on a KO on this fight.. This in my eyes will be the most entertaining fight at lightweight. Got to say devastated for Coyle he was class last night but he made a mistake he over committed himself and left his chin out to dry and Derry took full advantage.. Domestically lightweight and Super Featherweight are awesome divisions and with Luke Campbell fighting every month he will be in the domestic mix soon enough

It's a red hot division and any of the top 7 or 8 (bar Rickster) could beat each other on any given day. Curtis is looking very tasty at the weight and is the one to watch IMO but was impressed with Coyle last night too and he can come again for sure. I honestly don't mind who fights who from the list below...
Gethin
Rees
Woodhouse
Coyle
Mitchell
Derry
Crolla
Superb divison and it looks like the lads don't mind mixing it with one another so it's a win win for the fans.

I would be a bit worried if you didn't think you could win. And I have paid to see you many a time and think you are a good fighter but I think you need a couple of more learning fights before you mix it with these guys. I mean if you lose where do you go I'm sure you will get a good pay day fighting Matthews but I think if you genuinely want to fight more than 1 more fight have a couple more fights to get the experience then if you do well mix it with one of the 4. Anyway it's just my opion I just think it's gonna be a shame to see you retired when it's not needed to take the fight now.

didn't know you had moved down to lightweight, Curtis.
only thing missing from 135-pounds is a good yorkshireman.
hope you're strong moving down to lightweight - you'll bloody need to be.
your fights with bull and gavin were tremendous, so it'll be great to see you in the mix.

yes, as in crolla 1, you don't give derry the opening. not to a dangerous, experienced pro who will take that gap and exploit it.

Hopefully John Murray will get back into the mix as well... Though I'm not sure how much he has left after the Mitchell and Rios defeats. Has he even be cleared to fight again by the board?

where does john murray fit in? isn't he coming back, with Anthony farnell as trainer?
methinks ppl are really overlooking crolla. after the Matthews TKO setback, we've seen an extra dimension from him. he's done the 12 rds twice now which must've been a help. we've seen him produce more boxing, rather than trying to break everyone down. he didn't quite get it right vs Matthews 2, a fair draw as I saw it. crolla didn't give derry any of the openings that derry took in the 1st fight. crolla also showed patience but maybe took too long to get going and didn't press his advantage when he was really flowing, late on.
then vs rees (who stopped Matthews), we saw crolla's boxing brain evolve to the next level (and his fights become slightly less exciting). we saw crolla refuse to give rees openings. we saw crolla trick rees - the veteran - onto short jabs and arcing right hands. we saw crolla set his feet and hook rees to the body, accurately. we saw crolla move well, take ring centre when he wanted it, & have rees off balance, stumbling and lunging. it was subtle control from crolla, who threw the better punches and looked the happier of the two. crolla had the dangerous, crafty rees trapped in a little box, from which rees threw off balance shots, whereas crolla punched always with his feet in position. the exchanges were tough, but crolla came off the better, after the slow start.
this is proof that joe Gallagher's aggressive fighters don't all fight the same way. that there is a plan B and that crolla's one of the most improved fighters out there. how would crolla fare vs this Italian EBU champ, emiliano marsili? reckon after a euro title crolla's ready for burns. a bold pick but one i'm prepared to stand by. I know few believe in crolla just yet, but I see continued development for the "million dollar" lad. obviously, against burns, you'd have to see the smart boxing from crolla, and ALSO the terrific offensive work (that we see only in spurts at the moment).

I don't know who you're talking about, billy. I've not been on ESB for years and I don't get caught up in all these bickering matches.
mine's a balanced viewpoint, conceding that crolla didn't beat Matthews 2nd time, but that he's shown development and is becoming a threat now that he's showing a more balanced style having learned he cannot chop all his opponents down. all I've stated is he's not far off challenging a world title shot - and I never claimed he'd win it, but that he could make it a good fight, in light of the development he's shown.
crolla is not getting the credit he deserves for the rees win. it was a hard fight but Anthony landed the better shots because he was on balance and because he had rees well off balance. it was close because crolla took certain weapons out of his arsenal, so that rees wouldn't hurt & counter him - countering with jabs/rights early rather than leading with them. if crolla challenged burns he'd have to add more to his arsenal, to be in with a chance. he'd have to fight differently, but he is becoming a fighter who uses the right strategy.
I want crolla to gun for the European title. beat another guy who stopped Matthews (crolla's bogeyman), marsili, put Mathews well behind him. win another title, move up the ladder. of course burns will be very hard for crolla. crolla would have to box a beautiful, compact fight. and he'd have to turn the heat on.
I've always appreciated burns, since he beat Martinez. he's beaten different styles, in world class. as I see it, he's beaten 5 world class fighters in 2 weights. but since gonzalez negated burns in several rounds, making him look wild and gangling and wide with shots (albeit tenacious, pressing when everything's gone wrong), I think loads of fighters see things in burns and want to take advantage...when I see a boxer developing and delivering, I want to see him get rewarded - full stop. first, the EBU for crolla, get that Italian over...then the Scotsman whom opponents seem to quit against after hitting his rock hard, sinewy arms...
