How on earth can a proffesional fighter heading into an important World Title fight come in so over weight? Is he there just for the money?

Quite shocking, should this fight even go ahead with such a large weight difference?



At the weigh in for the WBA welterweight championship bout between Ricardo Mayorga and Jose Rivera, Mayorga weighed in at 153½ pounds. That is a full weight class above the contracted welterweight limit of 147. Since he was not even in the ballpark, Mayorga did not bother trying to lose the weight in the normally allotted 2 hours. All night the two sides have been negotiating to salvage the fight as a non-title contest. After Mayorga was able to lose 2 or 3 pounds, it seems as though Rivera has now agreed to go forward with the bout.

Rivera is preparing for the biggest payday of his career where he has been scheduled to receive a quarter of a million dollars. Most likely because of the money, Rivera will still fight Mayorga. The WBA will not sanction it as a title bout though. Rivera will keep the title even with a loss. Although the champion, Rivera is coming in at a 10-1 underdog.

Mayorga is reportedly at 151 now, still far above Rivera who weighed in at 146½.

Jesus, Rivera's gotta be worth a few quid. Mayorga may have lost heart after losing to Spinks (and the subsequent appeal over the decision).

i think the guys who wrote that is getting a bit over excited when he says that Mayorga may already be preparing for Tito by putting weight on.

I dunno, Adam. The payday for smashing Tito back into retirement is worth skipping a fight with the unheralded but useful Rivera. The risk was clearly too great for both Mayorga and Don King. There HAD to be a reason for Mayorga coming in so heavy. This does seem to make sense.

yeah but to start putting weight on already? i think it's very disrespectful. Maybe he struggled to get really motivated for the fight..thinking about the Tito fight, but i dont think he was deliberately preparing fot it.

The only fight I was really looking forward to watching too. I was banking on Mayorga not taking this too seriously, but his weight is beyond a joke. Really feel sorry for Rivera - his big chance and payday just went out the window.

If last year was the year of the upset, 2004 is looking like the year of the cancellation.

Ceefax are now saying the Mayorga fight is off.

Damn, I was really looking to the "El Pollo" (The Chicken) get his ass southern fried.

With regards to Mayorga, it was a mickey mouse title anyway (Spinks is the true WBA champ) so Mayorga probably thought fornicate it.

Mayorga is one of the most over-rated fighters of the modern era anyway...I predicted he would either lose to Spinks or as soon as he met a top fighter!

He has no class and is definately nowhere near as good as some people say.
