Wiliams is getting schooled against Martinez

so bad he didnt land a head punch in the 4th

WIlliams took a frightful shellacking.

Martinez looked very good very sharp and great footwork and stamina.

He looked bigger this time. Last time he looked and fought like a Welter. This time he looked the LM part and it also showed in his punching.

You really could put Sergio in with anyone i reckon.

As I predicted, Williams got outboxed to nonsense.

bad matchmaking and i'm not just saying that in retrospect i thought it weeks ago

why did he need to go for the rematch for a worthless title like the ibo he should have gone for the european title he was mad to take the rematch.

If you're referring to me, I browse other forums for a start and I'm going on my predictions that I made verbally to people. I never made ANY sort of prediction on here.

Only jesting. It always raises a chuckle in BN when the letters come in after a big fight upset and everyone is proclaiming: "I told you so."

i thought richard had a chance but he got taught a boxing lesson,shame really meet him really nice bloke.martinez is class going on to better things i think.

As the title of the thread says, Williams was schooled. Martinez looked great, but I still aint sure if he is 'that' good, or if Williams has slipped that much.

Williams offered nowt, and didn't seem to know what to do, his corner didn't seem to be much help either.

Shame.

Styles make fights at the end of the day. Williams style was perfect for Martinez.

That's right, Williams just can't fight southpaws. I don't think the placid corner helps him much either, sometimes he's just too damned relaxed.
Not to take anything away from Martinez of course, he's proven how good he is, which is very

Excellent post. Mr Bassie. Don Davis is a lovely bloke and a good trainer...but no doubt there's a strong man missing in that corner. Mick Williamson, the cutsman, seemed to be the man with the most presence in there.

i was really impressed with the referee, who could see williams was wilting from quite early and after every round let williams know that if he doesn`t start to up his workrate he was going to stop it.
he was constantly telling williams he wasn`t gonna stand by and see him seriously hurt, thus giving williams a chance to do something if he could.

Like I said in a earlier post my head said Martinez but my hart said Williams. But I didn't think it would so one sided.

Maybe it is a style thing but my gut feeling is that we have seen the best of Richard Williams unfortunatly.

However there still may be a few good paydays for him against our other fallen light-Middles Takaloo ans Alexander.

I really thought that this was a winnable fight for Williams. I'm just glad the prediction league isn't up and running again.

To me it was clear after the first couple of rounds that the only way Williams was going to win this fight was by KO. To be honest he never really looked like doing it. He just wasn't quick enough (with his hands or feet), because of this Martinez was able to dance his way around the ring.
I was more impressed with Martinez after this fight than i was after the Stone fight. He hardly got hit and in return he seemed to land his own shots whenever he felt like it. I thought his jab in particular was superb.
As KOJOE says there are still big domestic fights out there but unfortunately Williams is finished at the higher levels.

I have to disagree with the sky boys on one point though. I don't think this division is that impressive. Just look at boxrecs rankings, Mosley looks washed up, DLH has moved on, Vargas isn't exactly the most durable of fighters anymore, add to that the old men down towards the bottom of the top ten. In short if Martinez fights like he did last night on a regular basis he can win much more meaningful titles than the one he has.

Do you know I would rate that as one of the best performances in a British Boxing ring that I have seen in years. Martinez was brilliant - in some ways it reminded of Bomber Graham's great comeback performance vs Chris Johnson. Martinex oozed class, his speed is fantastic and he now looks a strong fully fledged Light Middle.

I went for Williams and if this would have been the Martinez of last year I think Richard might have done it. However, Martinez has improved physically and mentally since becoming champ and if Don King wants to see his new signing Winky Wright in a fight, then why not Martinez.

agreed I think smacked of desperation at that point tho Ian, he was getting a systematic beating by a fighter who looks like he is well on the up while Richard unfortunately never reached the heady heights he was predicted to.
Martinez made Richard look like a uncouth slugger last night, and no one else has managed to do that, bloke's class and wouldnt surprise me if he goes on to bigger and better things. While he may have problems with Winky I can see him beating Santos comfortably as Mcrory eluded to last night.
He looked strong in magnificent shape, fast and his handspeed and variety of shots just constantly withered poor old Richard.
Shame I get the impression Williams is one of the nicest guys in the business, but being nice doesnt win you world titles Im afraid.

Yeah, I'd like to see more of that ref. He was unobtrusive, sympathetic, and gave Williams every chance. Good job, ref.
As for Williams, I felt this fight was coming too soon for him. He clearly needed a break after losing first time to Martinez in June 2003, a loss which came at the end of a succession of title fights. He came back in January, when he stopped a strong but limited Ghanaian in seven rounds. Great. Give him a couple more fights, then pitch him back in with Martinez. But after ONE fight! Williams wanted the rematch I know, but it was asking too much to expect him to look his best after seven competitive rounds in 10 months.

Martinez spun him just before that though, I think that's why.
