How is David Barnes getting a British title fight...

...and why are the BBBoC sanctioning it ? :shame:

I'm going to the event and I'm a Frankie Gavin fan but it's a total mismatch if you ask me. Barnes hasnt fought a championship-round fight since July 2008 !!! Thats five years ago. In the past twelve months he's fought William Warburton a career journeyman and Ivan Godor who rarely even wins a round in this country never mind a fight.

Glenn Foot
Dale Miles
Bradley Skeete
Adil Anwar
Colin Lynes
Rick Godding
Mark Thompson

All fighters who are doing or have recently fought at Welter. Are we saying that a match cannot be made with any of these ?

Foot - Never fought over more than 8 rounds. Only had 8 pro fights.
Miles - Beaten 2 months ago by Patterson, who's boxing at area title level.
Skeete - Turned it down.
Anwar - Light Welterweight, just been beaten by Hamilton.
Lynes - Asked for too much money.
Godding - No notable wins, beat Pryce, who's a gatekeeper at best, over 6 rounds and that one was close.
Thompson - Light Middleweight, stopped in his last fight.

Of those, the only one I'd rather see other than Barnes is Lynes, who wanted too much money.

Unless I've missed something, Thompson won his last fight and it was around the Welterweight limit.

Not seen him since he lost in prizefighter.

Edit: Looks like he is fighting Nav Mansouri for the British light middle title in October.

Apparently Foot turned it down and is fighting another opponent, Dale Miles is a light welter, Bradley Skeete turned it down, Adil Anwar has just had a hard fight and is really a light welter, Colin Lynes apparently wanted too much money, Rick Gooding was turned down by the board apparently before, Mark Thompson is fighting Mansouri for the English, anyone else ? Not that easy to get an opponent, Tv company Promoters, fighters, the board, money, lots of boxes have to be ticked.

Before that he lost on points, split decision, Prizefighter.

Foot is fighting Ekundayo on Joshua bill Oct 5th

Matthew Hatton I would have liked to see but this is for outright keeps of the belt Barnes is in the top 15 in the UK

In the top ten he has beaten Witter and Vassell, Theopane fighting Cano on Mayweather undercard leaving John O'Donnell, Barnes and Chad Gaynor but he hasnt fought at 147 for a little while but reckon he could still make it

Can anyone see Barnes being even remotely competitive in this fight ?

No more than any of the others would have been. He is a actually more talented than most who turned it down.

Bottomline the only other real choice was Bradley Pryce.

Then Bradley should have boxed Barnes, winner to face Frankie who could have faced a decent Euro level or good American and then won the Lonsdale outright.

His last official fight was Evans in prizefighter who beat him. The last one I actually consider to be professional boxing was Culcay, who stopped him, albeit controversially. Plus, he's only made 10st 7lbs once and that was 5 years ago.

Who is going to pay for/organise that match-up? Sure I would prefer for Frankie to start making waves on the world scene/ gun for the Euro title but it is what is. How could they get a "decent Euro level or good american" at 6 weeks notice? Given the notice I think it's fine as a stay busy fight for Frankie. Barnes may be past his best but he's hardly a pushover; he only has two defeats and was a fine British champion at two weights!

Sometimes I think the practicalities of the sport are overlooked by boxing fans. Myself included.

Records can be deceptive; he has been very inactive, injury plagued and he can't be in the sort of shape required for a 12 round hard bout v the best he'll have faced.

Decent opposition can be found, there are some very good fighters that appear on shows, fight hard for their money and don't demand rock star money and I'd have thought that Frankies promoter would stump the money and organise the opponent and the show - the better the opponent the more will go and watch.

I would guess the money's fairly limited with there being 5 12 rounders on the show, it makes sense to win the Lonsdale outright then step up, rather than taking a step down after moving up a level.

Sorry gents, my fault as had looked at Thompson's record on boxrec and the last fight entered showed a TKO win - didn't see the small print saying it was Prizefighter. :TU:

It's fair enough, it is what it is; Frankie really delivered an excellent fight against Denton and if there's no one else then there's no one else. I think that Brook is in front of Frankie but not by so much to justify bragging about it and, for my money, Khan is way out in front.

Agree with that, but Khan's still a light welter for me because he's never fought at welterweight.

I was training with Barnsey a few years ago at irlam and Barnsey wanted the fight then so I told Anthony farnell and they said if he wanted it he cud hav it and frankie had only had a few fights. Barnsey never took it but Gavin has come on loads since then and Barnsey hasn't done much so this must be a money thing coz if he didn't fancy it then I cnt see how he does now??

Gavin has caught brook right up!! & the way brook as pulled on fighters etc. he'll need Gavin soon & get passed, for Gavin to take on the real live opponents.
All brooks posseses is a ranking which he's tried to trade on getting a pay day from khan rather then fight what's infront of him.
