We have all heard what “tricks” a so and so boxer was supposed to have done, horse shoe in the glove, cut a swelling eye, liniment on the gloves and a recently mentioned one of plaster of Paris on the bandages.
But how many of these are true?
And what other “tricks” have you heard of a boxer, or his corner, using to get an unfair advantage.

One last bit…a good one I read was a not so long ago fighter being spiked with laxatives before a fight..I am sure he tried to keep to his corners instructions of “keep it tight”

Yoko Gushiken's management would always present his challengers with a small box of peaches a few days before the fight. The fruit was top quality, luscious, irresistable, and presented in the manner of a goodwill gesture. There was no reason to suspect the fruit was injected with something that gave the fighters chronic diarrhoea. Nothing was ever proven I believe (the evidence, after all, was eaten). But suspicions linger.

Ali's corner pulled the conveniently split glove bit to buy time after Henry Cooper had scored a knockdown. Saw a suspiciously similar act by Wilfredo Gomez v. Carlos Mendoza. gomez was also reputed to fudge on the scales. Also accusations about Pedroza. Once, one of Pedroza's people was asked if the champ would be able to make weight for an upcoming bout. The second blurted out that Pedroza hadn't weighed 126 for years! Same deal with Jorge Lujan v. Jeff Chandler. Jeff's own scale had put him at 118 just before official weigh-in. But, the "official" scale had him at 113.5, Lujan at 118.

Panama Lewis took the stuffing out of one of his fighters' gloves, and the fighter beat his opponent so badly he retired him.

Yes that was a very sick thing to do, the injuries inflicted on the late Billy Collins was shocking.

Apparently Luis Resto was still training and sparring up untill a few years ago although he never did regain his license.

Did Collins die as a result of the injuries he sustained in that bout? If so, wouldn't that be a case for manslaughter (by way of the "reckless indifference" argument), rather than mere assault? Did Lewis ever do any jail time? Sounds like he should've done at least as much as his fighter.

he never died "directly" due to the injuries he recieved in the bout, but he slipped into depression, split up with his wife and began to drink heavily.
about a year after the bout his pick up truck ran off the road and he sadly did not survive the accident. :(
resto`s trainer and second were banned for life and a indefinate ban placed on resto.
later the trainer was sentenced to a term of three to six and resto a term of one to three for assault and conspiracy.
resto was also charged with being in charge of a deadly weapon.....his taped up fists.
i got this info from a book recounting weird and strange fights, not sure how accurate the info is.

rumours it was suicide. all very sad.

That story isn't actually true, I've timed it on the tape. There was one minute between bells same as usual.

Yes, but as some ESB retard recently pointed out in another thread (I believe it was by way of arguing that the ref in the Vlad/Brewster fight gave Brew a long count to recover), in half-speed slo-mo you can CLEARLY see that Ali gets a full 2-minute break between those rounds.

it's been told about various boxers, but kid mccoy is the one most often referred to....the story that he said to his opponent....."hey, look...your shoes are untied"...and when the guy looked down mccoy kayoed him. never did believe it, but it still pops up every now and then.

That anecdote probably dates back to the invention of shoelaces, or perhaps even sandal straps - "Hey, Thag, looks like ya got some sort of ugly-looking bug about to crawl in between yer big toe and its neighbor - better take care of it before we go after that mammoth...WHACK!"
