I am reading this week's boxing news, and thanks to Dixon and also the pro boxers involved for the depression article. Whilst it has personal resonance, I thought it was a great article on a rarely touched subject in sport, life and boxing.

I have been critical of Dixon's writing at times, though I have stated I think he has done a great, really good job as editor... Not to mention the biggest arms in boxing writing :-) But I enjoy every issue, and especially this one.

I also really liked Donald Macrae's article. I shall have to buy Dark Trade. I thought I had read it butane not! I must be getting punchy.

Anyway BN continues to be big a stretch the best boxing publication in the world, and I still get it eagerly as I did when I was 15....

Dark Trade - great book.

As my boxing News hasn't arrived I look forward to reading it tomorrow.

As much as I like the dark trade and its a good chronicler of a certain period of time. I think its slightly overrated. McRae puts himself and his girlfriend far too much into the story. That detracted from the prose for me. We spend as much time on our travels with him as we do getting the albeit unique insight into the fighters. His moral struggle of his own enjoyment of boxing wears thin after a while.

I've not got my boxing news yet but will read it tomorrow; I found Dark Trade heavy going, I thought I'd love it but didn't.

I haven't read BN in a while but I'll look this up.

Dark trade is excellent, Fascinating insight into life behind the boxing scene, and I didn't mind Donald putting himself in the story either. I thought it helped if anything, As the interaction between him and James Toney was very interesting

I agree Boxing News is by far the best boxing mag.
I was buying The Ring for about 4years but it wasn't really up to much and went downhill all the way.
Dark Trade was a great read but i concur that his dilemma about boxing is tiresome, he gets his point across the first time he brings it up and could have left it at that.

Interesting comments about Dark Trade. Yes, it's sometimes odd weaving one's personal story into a sports book. It can work though, in some was I think sports, especially boxing is kind of a personal obsession.

I remember I read one book about boxing, and the author's obsession with it; I rember it being quite good, but remember one weird chapter suddenly veering off about the author's homosexual experience in a toilet or something..... Very odd.

(No jokes!) does anyone remember what book this was?

I have that book at home but off the top of my head can't remember the name of it. That chapter stayed with me long after I finished reading it...just bizarre. And he dedicated the book to his recently departed doberman. Other than that it was a decent read. He had one theory that if Jess Willard had of continued for another few rounds that he would have beaten Dempsey because Dempsey was fooked.

Seriously though, was it 'this Bloody Mary is the last thing I own'? I don't think so, but I remember the author was obsessed by boxing and at one point considered mating with aNigerian woman as it increased the chances of him having a son who would be a heavy champ

i just got the BN and it's one of the best i've read in a long time great pieces as you said .

x2, a very good issue and best wishes to all involved; I was very surprised to see Ashley Sexton in there; I really imagined he was a real wide boy without a thought in his head - showed me I hope the lad goes from strength to strength.

The new BN Active section in Boxing News is a good step forward, I always thought they should have something like this in the magazine to give it another dimension and it seems since Fighting Fit went to the wall that they have found a niche in the magazine for this. The Freddie Roach stuff in this weeks Active section was really interesting stuff.

Great article on depression in Boxing News.
I'm always amazed that something so deep, so serious and yet so common is almost unspeakable in our time. Good to see this issue aired in Boxing News, it's a tricky subject to approach and was well handled.
