I think the damage he sustained from Lockridge was more of a factor than anything else combined with his other wars. Lockridge hit Gomez so hard he caused throat damage. I believe doctors advised Gomez to retire rather than fight Layne.

The great Wilfredo Gomez was winning the fight. He said that he would have give the great Eusebio Pedroza a shot at his newly won crown against Rocky Lockridge, but, like always, he looked the other way.

Panamanian Alfredo Layne was the number one contender for a whole year after he defeated some Puerto Rican fighter (I don't remember his name) by KO in Puerto Rico at the Gomez-Lockridge undercard.

After winning his hard fought title, he lost it to Brian Mitchell by TKO. I think Layne went down more from exhaustion than the punches he took from Mitchell. There was the example of a fighter of great discipline (Mitchell) vs no discipline or just discipline when you want it (Layne).

After that, Layne lost to the great Pernell Whitaker, and then dissapeared from the ranks. He died about 17 years ago in a drug trafficking incident in Panama City, Panama.

Layne is one of Panama's forgotten champs.

told Bazooka to retire, as his body was not responding well to the constant battering.

Wilfredo tried to hold the WBA Super-Featherweight Crown as long as he could, by postponing
his bout with Alfredo Layne '3-Times'.

Wilfredo didn't think Alfredo Layne was all that good also, and the plan was to dispose of
the Panamanian, and then go after the Lightweight Championship with hopes of fighting
Hector Camacho in a 'big money bout' for his final fight in the Fall of 1986..
I'm sure glad that didn't happen; would've been very ugly.

He could have easily packed in after Round 8.

But, he went out in the next Round, trying to win. An incredible show of courage in a losing effort.

Too bad Pedroza lost to McGuigan less than a month later.

In Round 8, Wilfredo put out a tremendous amount of punches, throwing them from
every angle while burning himself up.

In those last few seconds of Round 8, Wilfredo got nailed and was staggered, then Alfredo
dropped him with a long right-hand at the 2:58 Mark.

It seemed like Wilfredo would never recover in the corner between Rounds, with his face
all swollen and bruised.
He obviously didn't as he was dispatched shortly thereafter.

Hit Alfredo Layne with everything, and wobbled him several times.

But he was 'gassed' after all those flurries.

Truly a 'Forgotten War'.
It was a very good fight.
