I want to pay tribute to Jim Watt as a boxing commentator, there's never any bullshit, his analysis always seems to reflect what I'm seeing the ring, you know he's been there and he's straight as a dye.

Who would have thought that JW would go on to be a champion of another sort post his boxing retirement? Brilliant!

I liked Gutteridge and Carpenter better.

I think Gutteridge and Watt as a team were superb...Harry Carpenter was a national treasure...he was to British Boxing what Don Dunphy was to American Boxing....and that's a legend...we lost them all now....(apart from Watt)

Well u must either be watts publicist or easily.pleased watt is the worst commentator ever.the biggest moaner and whinger.

No such thing as a good commentator, all they do is talk over the action.

Watt is brilliant as a studio pundit though.

Iain Darke is the best, a nice mix of Harry Carpenter's professionalism with a bit of Larry Merchant witticisms. No excess waffle. Informed, unbiased, with a good sense of drama.

Carpenter and Reg Gutteridge were both fine commentators, impossibly superior to the modern pub babblers we have today.

Jim Watt is a very good analyst. Ex-fighters have the experience but without the intelligence or imagination to express that experience they often make for painful listening. Watt is as good as you're likely to get with an ex-fighter.

I used to find Jim Watt awful in the late 80's and early 90's. He would never express an opinion! The ref could be counting over a fighter, and he'd still be saying "I'm still very much on the fence here, this one really could go either way. Flufferson must be careful that he doesn't pull a muscle dancing on the spot waiting for the ref's count to finish."

He's improved these days; in fact in that regard, he's gone the other way if anything, but I'm still not a massive fan.

The guy never shuts up, states one thing then contradicts himself constantly by changing tact after then pats himself on the back for it. Occasionally he will get it right but that is usually when it's so obvious then even he cannot get it wrong.

Worse commentator/analyst I've encountered & I have been watching Boxing since mid 80's

It's the fact that Watt is a good ex-fighter and a good commentator that amazes me, I admit he probably needs to work as part of a team but it's many years since we had a single boxing commentator so that isn't a problem.

This isn't a "troll thread". I genuinely like JW. Did you hear the way he said Ricky Burns' only chance of not losing that last fight was if the judges saw it differently than he did, JW was hoping it would be so because of the Scottish connection, but then when the judges did see it differently enough to give Burns a draw you could tell Watt didn't really approve. Maybe that's not supremely professional commentary but it's human (and shows his integrity) and I like that.

Watt must be doing something right despite the mostly negative comments or he wouldn't have kept his job all these years.

Jim Watt is my favourite analyst or co-commentator.

He always calls the momentum swings. He is a no-nonsense play the percentages guy.

Who could forget his bloody war with The Bubblegum Bomber!

carpenter for me - hardly said anything sometimes but when he did it was the information you needed.
