Ricky Burns will fight again, says manager Alex Morrison

Ricky Burns says he will definitely fight again despite breaking a jaw in his world title defence on Saturday, according to his manager.

The WBO lightweight champion is due out of hospital later following surgery.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said there was "no guarantee" the Scot, 30, would box again, never mind give Raymundo Beltran a rematch after their draw.

"Ricky will definitely fight again, one million per cent," manager Alex Morrison told BBC Scotland.

"I spoke to him this morning and he is definitely coming back, although when that will be, we don't know."

Saturday's fight at the SECC ended in controversy, with Beltran, his management and many other observers believing the 32-year-old Mexican had won.

Burns's camp say their fighter sustained a broken jaw in the second round.

He had an operation to insert titanium plates on Sunday amid speculation about his boxing future and another match-up between the two fighters.

Hearn suggested that, if he did return to the ring, Burns might have to move up a weight.

The promoter and Beltran's manager, Steve Feder, did not think a rematch was likely, with the latter suggesting his boxer would not be keen to return to Scotland.

However, Morrison believes Burns owes Beltran another shot at the title - and says the Coatbridge fighter is keen for it happen.

"It's the moral thing to do," he said. "Ricky wants to fight him again here in Scotland in front of another packed crowd.

"But it will only take place here in Scotland.

"If Beltran wants a rematch, he'll have to come here again."

On Monday evening, Burns took to the social network Twitter and seemed to echo Hearn's earlier promise that the fighter would return for a rematch with Beltran, posting: "Thanks every1 for the messages, fingers crossed the damage isn't too bad and we can get the rematch on the go."

This would sell better than any other fight i reckon.

Given the massive publicity the first one caused, it would do well.

I think unless there is a rematch Ricky would get slaughtered by non British fans. He has to rectify this straight away. It's probably gonna take a fairly big purse to get Beltran over here again but if that's what it takes then so be it.

Beltran is going to look at this and figure, "I couldn't knock him out despite him fighting 10 rounds with a broken jaw, so i'm not going to stop him and i'm not going to get the decision."

equally burns will not go to the states, burns is unlikely to knock beltran out and will certainly struggle to get a decision away from home considering the history of this match up.

short of paying beltran a fortune i don't know if this will go ahead

How many tickets does Beltran sell? I would suggest not many, therefore Burns' camp hold all the aces here, Beltran will have to go to Scotland again - that's where the crowd will be, the Sky TV coverage, the sponsorship etc etc.

to be fair, considering the reaction to the decision from saturdays fight, we might actually find the judges will be more inclined to lean towards beltran in a rematch, even in scotland.

Why should he come back here to get jobbed again to a lesser fighter.

Its the only world title fight Beltran is likely to get. I give Burns credit for wanting the rematch and accept the argument it cant happen in the states due to finances. A rematch in Glasgow is about as fair as Burns can realistically offer.

Thing is though this all predicated on him coming back soon. He might be out for about a year. Beltran might have had 2 more losses by then. Burns might also come back as a Lww.

Whatever he does he might want to approach fights with an actual gameplan for now on.

I don't think a rematch in the US is impossible. Neither are ticket sellers in the States. But there are huge main events over there that they could be chief support to. I mean with respect Danny Garcia v Mathysse is a bigger fight and is on the undercard of Floyd v Canelo.

So whilst both sides may not want it to happen over in the US, to say it absolutely can't is rubbish.

The jaw shouldn't take more than 8 weeks to heal, more time would be needed for it to take punches probably, so maybe another 4-6 weeks. So he could be back sparring in 3 months, with a 10-12 week camp, he should be back around March/April.

Wouldn't his strong showing v Burns elevate him in the rankings? Would he get into a more favourable position for a shot at another champion?

How does that work parsons? I mean how do the governing bodies decide on who they would like as champion, is purely based on what the fighter can bring in on sanctioning fees or?

He'll probably get paid more against Burns.

Yes, maybe but he may get a shot in the US; there must be a million things going through his mind at the minute.

Beltran may be a good option for the other champions at the weight. They may see him as a fighter who they can beat, but was hard done by not to get the decision, so the fans may want to see the fight.

Should be a 50/50 purse split.
