McCoy has to go with Barry McGuigan on this one

I was watching the Chris Eubank-Dan Sherry fight on channel5 a couple of weeks ago & was surprised at how biased Barry McGuigan was in favour of Eubank

Barry was commentating on Probox with David Brenner

It all started in round 3 when Eubank landed a fast right hand, the punch had no effect on Sherry but McGuigan shouted

"Hes really hurt Sherry, Sherry smiled, but thats a sign of hurt!"

What made it even funnier was when Barry said that Sherry had a defensive Eubank in a corner with his gloves up, whilst dan was throwing combinations

Less than a minute later in the same round Eubank lands another right hand that once again doesnt seem to have any effect on Sherry but Barry thinks differently & squeals

"HES HURT HIM NOW!"

Round 4, Sherry throws a 4 punch combination which 2 shots landed cleanly, & barry simply says

"Well blocked"

Sherry then lands a quick left hook, & Barry says

"Im impressed with Eubanks power!"

David Brenner probably sensing that Barry wasnt giving dan the credit he deserved, said

"You have got to give Sherry his due, hes taking this fight to Eubank"-

Barry must have had too much wax in his ears as he didnt answer brenner back

Eubank throws another right hand that doesnt seem to land flush, even the pro Eubank crowd can see this as they remain silent, but not biased Barry who says

"Another good right hand has hurt Sherry again!"

Now onto round 5

The silent crowd are sensing that this is turning into a competitive fight, but not Barry who says

"Eubank is controlling this fight with ease"

Eubank lands a good left hook, but doesnt trouble Sherry, Barry then tells us

"Nice left hook, hes hurt Sherry again!"

Round 6, barry tells us Sherry is hurt again, what a surprise that is, & comes out with this whopper

"Every single shot he hits Sherry with he hurts him"

Barry doesnt say much in round 7, maybe he is thinking of another word he could use to describe Sherry as being hurt, but at the end of the round both men return back to their stools & a worried david brenner sensing the fight could be slipping away from Chris says

"Id love to be a fly on a judges scorepad"

The camera then cuts to Gary Stretch, asking his thoughts on the fight so far, & Gary says

"I have Eubank 7 rounds behind"

When david brenner asks Barry how he feels about Stretches view on the fight an angry barry says

"I think im going to have to disagree with you gary, thatrs dreadful, Im glad your not a judge!"

Eubank finally does hurt sherry in the 9th, & Barry tells us

"Hes badly hurt!"

Round 10. Referring to how Sherry looked in the previous round, Brenner says

"For the 1st time in this contest Sherry really looks a sorry sight" Whilst Barry was probably thinking What about the other 50 times?

Eubank finally starts putting the pressure on Sherry, & barry shouts

"come on now Chris!"

We all know what happened next, Eubank headbutts Sherry & then we witness the worst acting of all time from the canadian

Barry says

"Theres no need for that, hes hamming it up dave"

When hearing Eubank is going to get a 2 point deduction Barry says

"OH BOY"

Chris retains his title on the judges scorecards, & when he is announced the winner a jubilant Barry shouts

"THANK GOD FOR THAT!"

Barry ignored sherrys good work throughout the whole fight, & seemed like he was in love with Eubank!

Thats why Barry McGuigan wins the McCoy most biased commentator award 2004!

Brenner used to co-commentate with Jim McDonnell and they worked well together. For some reason, they brought McGuigan on board in late 1989 and it became a mess. I remember when Eubank licked Benn in 1990 at the NEC, the commentary was awful. It was a thrilling fight and all three commentators were talking at the same time, nay, shouting at the same time, and just got on your nerves.
As for biased commentary: I would say Harry Carpenter's commentary in the Wilfred Benitez-Maurice Hope fight in 1981 was pretty bad. He almost had you convinced the southpaw Londoner was doing well, when in fact Maurice was getting the shit kicked out of him by a peak Benitez.

Can't recall off hand who it was, but it was the Americain commentry for the Hagler - Leonard fight. I haven't watched the fight in years because the result still annoys me.


The bit than really gets to me is about the seventh round when Leonard is retreating and throws a Bolo punch.

The commentator said "Leonards shows him the Bolo punch...AND LANDS IT!!!!"

It was a LOW BLOW, if I recall it hit Hagler half way down his shorts on his right leg! Yet the pro Ray Commentators nearly wet themselves.

I watched that fight the other night myself, and you're right, Sherry was in fact giving Eubank lots of bother, and Eubank didn't look good at all, it was amazing that Sherry's shots seemed to be totally ignored.

The worst I've ever heard is a kingvision version of Lewis v Holyfield 2 which I bought from a canadian trader, Bob Sheridan and some other guy did it, they give Holyfield something ridiculous like the first 7-8 rounds straight. It's absurd, he drones on and on about how great it is to work for Don King and how all the folks at DKP appreciate their jobs

I seem to recall that the SKY team of Darke and McCrory were quite pro Tyson in his fight against Brian Neilson.

At one point Darke said about Tyson "Oh his smokin' tonight"

Yet I thought Tyson looked beefy, slow, sluggish with very poor footwork that night.

That was the wors I ever saw Tyson, including his defeats

It's funny how we always remember Harry's "Get in there Frank!!" - I think it's because generaly, UK commentator's try not to be too obvious about it.
Listening to some of our European cousins though, it's "Allez Christophe!!!"
from the French commentators. And the Polish commentary team were cheering on Golota the other night too.

That said, Darke does get stuck in a rut sometimes - like he's made his mind up as to who is the better fighter early on, then regardless of what happens in the ring, tends to favour that fighter for the rest of the fight.

And Glenn agrees completely of course

Incidently, do we reckon McCrory's new role is a promotion, or a demotion??

This goes back to an article many years ago dealing with the Danny Romero-Willy Salazar fight. Romero was unbeaten and Salazar was thought to just be an easy win. Salazar hits Romero with a right and his eye closes all the way. They finally stop it after the 7th, even though Romero did hit Salazar with some bombs throughout the fight. Salazar gets the TKO win.

Steve Farhood, current broadcaster for ShoBox, at this time was the editor of the Ring, he posted a recap of the fight in the sister magazine KO, stating how in a couple of more rounds Romero would have stopped Salazar, how Romero doesn't deserve to lose his unbeaten record. How Salazar better relish his win, because he didn't deserve it. A very biased account of the fight and of the fighters.

harry carpenter has consitenly claimed that this was the most embarrassing moment of his comentating career. he feels he let himself down by his lack of professionalism.

Sheridan on the Tua vs Rahman II fight was pretty bad, it was David this and David that like he was his best friend and his scoring was shambolic.

I thought Darke and McCory were pretty bad for Morales vs Barrera II, I had no fear of the fight not going to Barrera (I thought it was a clear victory) they just seemed to ignore Barrera's work.

Steve Holdsworth can be pretty bad for bias, sometimes he obviously views a fighter for the first time and is impressed, then he'll pretty much ignore what the other fighter is doing and focus entirely on the good work of the other guy. Ottke vs Tate II was pretty bad, but he worse on the more obscure fighters.

All the time it was Robin's getting done, this is disgusting - nothing about the fact that Ottke winning some of the rounds.

Fat Bob Sheridan without a doubt. Plus he knows nothing about boxing.

Actually, a mate of mine met him when he was over for the Fenech - Nelson rematch and he said he's a really nice bloke.

But for bias and gibberish, he's da man!

didn`t harry carpenter famously let his `bbc world service persona` slip at the end of the rumble in the jungle as well?
he had been quite close to clay/ali and often went to the states to interview the great one, and i think ali also liked harry a lot, in fact at one point early in his career ali refused to do interviews with anyone but made an exeption for our `arry.
his emotional rant "oh my god, i dont believe it! he`s won the title back at 32!" is a timeless example how the old bbc stiff upper lip collapsed under the weight of a genuine friendship.

'arry didn't let his bias get the better of him at the end Ali/Norton 3 though.. He clearly stated that Norton had been robbed..

I was actually laughing my bollocks off reading it.

Has anyone seen that show where Harry Carpenter and Reg Gutteridge watch old classic fights and commentate on them, not sure if it is still on TV, but it's a pleasure watching such a couple of class acts, sort of like the old codgers on the muppet show, but less grouchy.
