As great as Muhummad Ali was, I agree that Ali did not deserve the fighter of the year award in 1963. Winning a close decision and getting knocked down hard in another fight are not the things I would associate in the Fighter of the Year. I think a far better choice on the merits, but not really realistic because of all the bad press he received, would have been Sugar Ramos. He beat a great fighter in Davey Moore to win the featherweight title, defended against a quality contender in Rafiu King, and even traveled to London to win a nontitle bout against a London lightweight in Sammy McSpadden. I think Ramos's body of work surpasses Ali's.

Maybe Ring Magazine simply didn't want to remind readers again of the Davey Moore tragedy.

Yes, I realize it was not the fault of Ramos, but the death might have had a bit to do with Ring looking elsewhere for fighter of the year.

In the case Sportsman was meant here, I don't believe he was meant in the sense that "He was the most gentlemanly, nice sportsman of his time", but rather the greatest athlete of his time or of the century...according to SI.

Inoki vs Ali was definitely dull, but that was more to do with Inoki than Ali. Ali just got a lot of money to go through with the bout not quite knowing what to expect. Inoki fought the whole thing, completely low to the ground so that Ali couldn't have landed a punch, and rarely did anything to wrestle Ali or gain an advantage. So it was just an all around boring event as nobody engaged.

I would say the entire event was probably best left alone, but whatever it happened and is a pretty forgettable part of cross promotional history.

I can't believe Il Manichino is crucifying Ali for performing in some meaningless exhibition. He's probably upset because he spent his SSDI check on the 'fight'.

Was not an 'Exhibition', it was a highly promoted Event, where Muhammad Ali
took in $6,100,000 from his 'faithful' Sheep following fans, and the 'unsuspecting public'.

We all know how respectful the Japanese are.

Well those spectators at that event, threw garbage at Muhammad Ali as he left the Ring
and walked down the aisles.

The 'ultimate humiliation' getting garbage thrown on you.

Not 'booed', but actual 'trash', of half-eaten food and empty beverage containers.

Yes,,,,,,,,'The Greatest of All-Time'...........Yes,,,,,,,,'Con-Artist'

Hey Mr. That One,,,,,,,,,,,,Would you buy a car from Muhammad Ali......

You know you wouldn't.
Those racist Japanese should have thrown the garbage at the clown who spent the entire match on the canvas.

Out of interest what month of 1963 did they publish the "Fighter of the Year" or was it published in 1964?

"If I knew that by getting my ass knocked on the floor in England would have gotten
me that award, I just might have stayed in England when I was over there, and
got dropped by a Bloke.'
And Ali gave him two good whuppings for his insolence...

I don't think the boxing community wanted to see the GOAT make Liston cry "uncle" yet again.

Another fake quote from Liston.

So now we are to believe that in October of 1966 Liston publicly admitted that his two fights with Ali had "strings attached" You and your lies are pathetic.
