Audley Harrison v Nicolay Popov

OK I have heard this is the opponent. Seeing as he only has 2 weeks notice I would say this is pretty good, a definate step up in class as well. This guy is 6'5" and seeing as people mentioned Corey Sanders (the American one!!) as a possible next opponent the fact that this guy holds a good win over him speaks volumes for how well Audley's promotional team have done. Again I wanna stress it aint final yet as I aint seen it anywhere else apart from on a forum but this guy is pretty well in the business.

This guy would probably beat Audley.

Yeah, here I go again, hypercritical Yank slagging a British fighter...;)
The only name opponent on Popov's record is his January win over Corey Sanders. Sounds good, right? But ... Sanders has done f*** all since his last win, over 2 years ago over Maskaev, who had been KOed by both Kirk Johnson and Lance Whitaker in the 2 years leading up to his fight with T-Rex. Since beating Maskaev, Sanders' weight has ballooned up to well over 300 lbs, and he's gone 0-4, including a KO loss to the much smaller DaVarryl Williamson and completely lopsided decision losses to Eliecer Castillo and Timo Hoffman. So beating him is a decent win for a young up-and-comer like Popov, but fighting Popov is most certainly NOT a step up for someone like Audley. Hell, Popov is ranked well below Hersisia, and Hersisia's ranking has dropped quite a bit since his loss to AH. Popov is barely in the top 100, and the *only* reason he's even that high is his recent win over the free-falling (but highly ranked not too long ago) Sanders.
If there was a valid reason they needed a last-minute sub, fine, but was that the case here?

Actually, I quite enjoy my frequent trips to the UK - the pillaging has been consistently good.

OK Eric lets line up all of your American fighters and see how many of them want to step in with Audley at 2 weeks notice, probably only James Toney, Chris Byrd and Jameel McCline. See what I mean also u seem to be going this guy beat this guy but he lost to this guy who beat this guy and that guy.
Man if were doing it like that then Ill say Audley is already the best because he beat Wade Lewis, who beat Jeff Pegues, who beat Billy Zumbrun, who beat Joe Hipp, who beat Jose Ribalta, who beat Leon Spinks, who beat Muhammad Ali.

No, can't quite agree with that, James. Good knowledge though.

No one has answered my question of why there was such short notice here. Was there a valid reason for AH's promoter to slap together a card on short notice, or is that just an excuse for him to fight a second-rater like the Popov? If you're grooming a talented prospect for an eventual title shot, is that the way you go about it?
And James' chain of guys leading to Spinks/Ali is quite cute, but not the same as judging guys like Popov and Sanders on how they've done RECENTLY, which is what I was doing.
And it's not so much an anti-British-fighter thing as the well-established fact that big-time British promoters are some of the worst offenders when it comes to feeding their cash-cow eternal prospects a litany of stiffs and passing them off as world-class challengers. Here in the U.S. Joe Mesi has gotten a lot of grief about supposedly being an overhyped fraud, but you know what? Despite his having far less of a natural gift than Harrison, Mesi has actually been making an honest effort to improve himself and steadily progress in his level of competition. Imagine - people were ragging on him for fighting a toughie like Jirov, merely because Jirov had spent his career up to that point at cruiserweight. If Audley or his promoter ever found their collective nuts and took on someone like Jirov, you guys would be falling all over yourselves to say how tough and skilled Jirov is, how he was the oustanding boxer of the '96 Olympics, etc. Mesi had no Olympic gold medal that allowed him to sign a big-money TV contract right after turning pro, and wasn't blathering about winning this or that title within a year, like Audley did. Guess what - 3 years in, Audley has yet to make good on his promise, and has yet to fight for even a second-tier title (that WBF belt isn't worth the toilet paper it's printed on).

A few decent points there Ill try and get through them, I heard from a reliable source that Auds next opponent would be Steffen Nielsen a guy ranked well in the top 10 by EBU. Audley was on BBC a few days later as a pundit for the 4 Nations Amateur boxing championships, and Dominick Guinn v Monte Barret. The team then asked him about his next fight and who the opponent is, he said that he did have an opponent lined up but they couldnt finalise the deal for some outside reason. The very next day Nielsen announces a fight with Paolo Vidoz. I reckon the opponent Aud spoke of in that interview was either Nielsen or Vidoz. Now Auds promotional team (he is self promoted) will have had a month to find an opponent, I cant see many people wanting to step in with Aud at such short notice.
Also you have mentioned about a lot of British Fighters being fed naff opponents, I agree with this to a certain extent this may be a pop at a lot of allegedly's fighters, who end up with a title of little worth and then get fed below World class opposition up until recently Hatton and Calzaghe may have been a victim of this. Audley aint a great friend or fan of allegedly, and the 2 have had many run ins over different issues. After Audley's fight with Brian Nix Audley said ok Im ready to go back to the UK and contest for the British title. A few days later Danny Williams (the then Champion) and Michael Sprott (the then challenger) sign for allegedly. Aud has always made it clear he doesnt want to fight on Sky TV (FWs TV company) Julius Francis also signed and Francis allegedly had a verbal agreement with Audley that he would fight Aud early in the year. This effectively froze Audley out of the domestic mix and killed a lot of good fights. Audley has subsequently had to find a new path and has chosen the WBF title, a paper belt as you say but a belt that he can use to fight over 12rounds. Im pretty sure that the WBF will happily sanction any fight Audley goes into, but it ensures that the opponent will have to fight 12rounds. At this stage in his career Audley needs 12rounders and this title will ensure that if he goes in with an opponent who takes him the distance he will have fought over 12 rounds. On the subject of Jirov Audley has sparred with Jirov about this time last year, dunno how it went mind. If Audley were to fight Jirov in his next fight and win tho, who does he fight next, Wladimir, Toney, Tua.Usually when an undefeated fighter loses it takes him a year or so to get back to where he was, appreciate the fact that Audley doesnt have a spare year and cant go making big steps up in class. By this time next year he will be in the mix for a legitimate World title shot. Believe and you will recieve.

Eric I agree with you about Audley needing to step up but the promotion details is a digression. Audley calls ALL the shots, he promotes himself and doesn't let anyone control him. Hence, he doesn't exactly fit into the 'protected cash cow' category.
There's a reason why Audley is taking things slowly, but I don't really know what it is. He is the most confident, mentally strong fighter out there, I doubt he's taking it easy because he's afraid of getting beaten.

If that doesn't make Peter Buckley 'the man' who had Lennox's number all along (or at least when he lost to McCall) I don't know what does.
