Ali went down to the crossroads somewhere in New Orleans, where he buried a little something, muttered a few incantations and VOILA! Marie Laveau appears in the flesh!
That's when the dark spirit appeared, and offered to trade him the "anchor punch" that would secure his second win over Liston. All he had to do was accept the dark spirits "gift' of Parkinson's, which would arrive years later. Ali agreed....and in essence sold his soul.

One "writer" in a boxing mag shortly after the fight offered the theory that the anchor punch was actually an advanced karate chop application delivered with high intensity torqueing action.
I guess this possibly led to maximization of discombobulation on Sonny's part, to work off of Buzz's theory.
Wish I would have kept that old mag.

I liked the windmill punch... Ray Leonard used it to fake out Duran and then hit him with the other hand. Then Duran quit.

Aside from.the controversial ending Ali looked absolutely awesome...the confidence and ring generalship since becoming champion was supremely evident...the movement, the speed just awesome...no heavyweight in history could come close to Ali 64-67...imo...:-D

Funny because I remember a poster years back going on about this anchor punch and I thought he was trolling . So Ali actually spoke of this?

My name is not Cassius Clay, I'm now 'Cassius X'.
I don't want to go into the Armed Services. How can I, when Hollywood wants to
make a Movie about my life, starring me. I was meant to be in Motion Pictures
with my looks, not in some Battlefield holding a Rifle.
I'm pretty. Only ugly men should be forced to into the Service. Look at me,
who would want to shoot me.

So which is it? Did Sonny take a dive, or did he forget how to fight? Get your excuses for Ali kicking his ass straight.

It didn't help that Referee Jersey Joe Walcott lost control of the situation in the second bout between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston. Another debacle involving a former world heavyweight champion as a referee took place when Joe Louis was the third man in the second bout between Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry. As the bout progressed, Quarry was rendered virtually helpless and took quite a bit of unnecessary punishment because Louis didn't stop it soon enough.
