Rumours are doing the rounds that Steve Collins is joining the Semi-Pro circuit with his first fight being against ex-pro Andrew Flute. The Celtic Warrior must be short of money as many have feared.

Danger is, at 44 (ish), he'll be a marked man.

These cases should be looked at and a sort of PFA set up to protect pros interests when they're in game? Far too many end up potless.

you're a bit out there mate, I've checked and Collins is 50 next year. In fact thanks to you I've just spent 20 minutes trawling through random boxers records, starting with an American Heavy named Steve "Freight Train" Collins, before having to go back because I forgot I was looking for Steve's date of birth.

He is fighting someone I know in Leicester next month. The build up has been very staged but I know when there in the ring yoza be trying his best to hurt him.
Crazy that Collins has been talking about fighting RJJ and now ends up on a show like this!

100% true from what im told , Spoke to yozza within the last few days as i have 7 lads boxing on this show .

edit : in fact i just looked on that site and saw 3 of my boxers on their videos lol.

All the talk of the RJJ fight was a self created publicity stunt to get his name back out there and see if anyone cared enough to give him a fight. It hasn't worked and this is what it has resorted too. Sad really.

Im gonna go against the grain here and this is gonna sound harsh but why should there be something set up to help these guys after they retire? No offense but they're not little kids who cant look after their own affairs. If every fighter ended up skint then id think differently but they dont so.

Flute was a solid pro in his time, no disrespect to him whatsoever but in their respective primes, Collins would have absolutely panelled him.

They're grown men though Palooka. It's not like in most "normal" professions you have some kind of fund set up for you if you fritter away what you earn. Especially guys like Collins, etc. These guys made millions. Sorry but it's their own bloody fault if they manage to blow all that.

I suspect his ex-wife might have something to do with it.

It would be 50% at most though and im sure even with that he made a lot himself.

I agree with Columbo. Give guys a safety net and they're even more likely to spunk their money away.

It will also be a very large % of future earnings. Most of these divorce settlements take into account the lifestyle that they have been living in and are accustomed to, irrespective of current and future earnings c.f. Ray Parlour.

He also fighting ex pro frank Harrington in lancaster

i see collins about 3 weeks ago at a blue collar/unliecensed show and he was a guest there so he's certainly in that circle ,to be fair the quality of the fights was worse than novice amateurs there was a guy that looked like the rock but fought more like a stone ,if it's anything like that show collins will be ok .

Where would you draw the line? What sort of "safety net" would constitute a moral hazard, encouraging boxers to "spunk" their money away?
