Ricky Burns has said he will only find out if he can continue with his career when he returns to sparring.

The WBO lightweight champion had his jaw broken in his last fight against Ray Beltran, one that was controversially scored a draw by the judges.

Both Burns and promoter Eddie Hearn are hoping the Scot will be fit to make a mandatory defence against Terence Crawford in the New Year, although Burns is not getting ahead of himself.

"The jaw is getting there, healing the way it should do, I'm in light training but no boxing for another four to five weeks," he told Sky Sports.

"When I say light training I mean swimming or cycling, even jogging I need to stay away from. There's nerve damage, it's still numb but it's getting there.

"The surgeons said my jaw should go back to where it was and hopefully when I start back sparring all those doubts will be put to rest.

"I will need to take a couple of clean shots to put my mind at ease. But I just need time for it to heal and have another x-ray to make sure it's all healed."

Burns is aware that he was fortunate to retain his title in Glasgow and is quite happy to take on Beltran once more.

"I was talking to Eddie, we are hoping it's going to be January/February time but we'll know a bit more over the next few weeks," he added.

"I'm up for fighting anybody and Terence Crawford is my mandatory challenger. Beltran does deserve a rematch, everyone who knows me knows that wasn't me from the second round on - I was in survival mode.

"There's definitely unfinished business I need to take care of."

For Ricky more than anything i hope he gets the rematch which im quietly confident he can win,although i still think broken jaw or not,Beltran will give him hell again

Either way Crawford beats him.

I also think that Crawford is all wrong for Ricky. Landslide points loss.

Eddie has turned down the Crawford fight even though Arum already announced it.
Trying to sell the Beltran rematch to HBO.

Eddie Hearn has spoken to Beltrans team and they have offered the rematch according to one in FB, one problem that might be in the way is Crawford who is the mandatory and is TR fighter along with Beltran, so he might have to be paid to step aside ? I am glad there trying to get it happening for both parties.

I can't see Burns getting past Beltran and Crawford, who look likely to be his next two opponents. If he can regain his form, he might beat Beltran. Can't see him beating Crawford though. I imagine a top priority now for Burns is to maximise every penny from the next two fights as his reign at the top looks to have a limited shelf life.

Unlike every other LW in the UK Ricky is world class and if it's Beltran next he will prove it big time, what happened injury wise was a nightmare and I can't think of any other fighter in the UK who would have fought on in the manner Ricky did,Beltran or Crawford or ? Will see a diffrent Ricky when he's fit to go again.

Yes but Barnes was unbelievably defensive so he took very few shots on it after it went.

I know he's very highly thought of but im not totally sold on Crawford. Ive watched a few of his fights and he looks good in spots but he has flaws aswell. To be honest, I think Burns might deal with him better than Beltran.

Sounds like a couple of other Americans who were hyped up and brought over here, we know how those ended.

TBH i dont think Crawford is just a hyped job up like lacy or broner .. crawford looks like he has the skills to back it up... id rather ricky fought Beltran...

If that happened it would be over 10 world title defences, at 2 weights, a unification of titles and a win in America. There's very few fighters in Britain that would be able to compete with that, let alone Scotland.

If that happened it would be over 10 world title defences, at 2 weights, a unification of titles and a win in America. There's very few fighters in Britain that would be able to compete with that, let alone Scotland.

It's not the number of defences it's the quality
