Unbeaten Liverpool sensation faces huge step up on October 26

Callum Smith will face Ruben Acosta for the WBC International Super Middleweight title at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on October 26, live on Sky Sports.

The Liverpool star is the hottest young prospect in British boxing with six consecutive first round wins, the latest landing him the English title against Patrick Mendy.

Now the 23 year old steps up the levels to face the vastly experienced Acosta, the 35 year old who challenge Robert Stieglitz for the WBO World title and knocked out former two-time Light Middleweight king Julio Cesar Vazquez, and Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher is expecting his charge to handle the shift in class.

“It’s a huge step up in class for Callum,” said Gallagher. “He has not been a pro for even a year but we’re very confident he has the goods to tackle someone of Acosta’s class.

“Ruben has mixed with World-class company; he holds a great first round KO win over Vazquez, he’s been in with Anthony Mundine and he’s boxed for a World title. He’s got great experience and Callum hasn’t faced anything like this.

“He’s going to give him rounds and going to give him problems too, there’s no-one out there who has fought someone this good in just their ninth fight inside a year of being a pro.

“Callum is still wet behind the ears but there’s great faith in him from Eddie Hearn. We know the risks in the fight, I’ve looked on the independent ratings like BoxRec and he’s at number 38, so he’s well-respected and will have big ambitions of his own, just like Callum has.”

Smith’s clash with Acosta is part of a great line-up in the Steel City, with Kell Brook’s Welterweight blockbuster with Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Brian Rose facing Javier Maciel in a final eliminator for the WBO Light Middleweight title while Olympic Gold medal hero Anthony Joshua MBE faces Paul Butlin in his second professional fight.

Good match, I'd rather see Callum compete against fielding who doesn't posses so many rounds on him or domestic level fighters who are tough.i think smith will be allright looks really good with no visible weakness. He didn't display the power he's shown in the ams, obviously he has developed but there are still questions to be asked on his durability & does he have his man strength yet???
They seem to be wasting no time with him & have obviously great belief in him.
Hearn seems to be great for the fans in how he's moving fighters along

For sure. Was gutted when Yafai got injured and looking forward to him moving forward now. Hopefully rather rapidly!

Perhaps in the amateurs he was beating opponents before the first round started rather than during it ?

He was having trouble making weight and he had the towel treatment going on to preserve his dignity but kugan and co fucked that right up by doing an interview with Brian Rose right next to him as he was start bollock naked

If he wins i dont see the point of Callum going the domestic route, i think he should just fight at international level and build up good experience against this level of opponent.

They said Thomas hearns wasn't a banger in the ams. Smith looks so effortless & don't appear to load up. I like the look of him alot! He has the frame to end up a cruiserweight !

In the amateurs though a lot of fighters are looking to score points vs knocking guys out. Especially if you're more of a backfoot/ box at range kind of boxer. I cant imagine Campbell was exactly bowling them over in the AM's and yet his power has looked good in his first couple of fights.

Would it be fair to say alot of these international ams are weakend & boxing pretty constant v guys at a level who are hard to nail cleanly.
I thought the Irish kid who lost to Campbell would of made a better pro as he looked more solid & stronger but Campbell seems to allway's excell apart from ice skating

agree re; the irish boy, thought he slipped and rolled lovely at times, a good starter for a pro.

Would there be any reason why smith v fielding would not be made? Same promoter...huge Liverpool fight....commonwealth belt on the line.......makes sense, will it happen though?
