Jimmy Ellis vs. Earnie Shavers
33 1/2 year-old - Jimmy Ellis, with a record of 38-7-0 {22 KO's} was riding high, with an
8-Bout {8 KO's} winning streak over the past 13-Months.
The 6' 1" 199 lb. former WBA Champion was being considered as a Challenger for Heavyweight
Champion - George Foreman, for a possible Spring 1974 Championship bout.
In the past 8 1/2 years {since December 1964} Jimmy had comprised a record of 23-2-0 {16 KO's},
with his 'only' losses coming to Joe Frazier {February 1970} and Muhammad Ali {July 1971}.
Jimmy had retired following the loss to Muhammad Ali, but 10-Months later {May 1972} he returned,
and has rebounded with '8-Straight' wins over a group of Trial-Horses, and has moved into the
#4 Heavyweight spot, behind..... Ken Norton, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
Manager - Angelo Dundee has the veteran in great physical condition, and a win here will set up
a 'possible' bout with George Foreman.
I don't think that would have ended well for Jimmy.

The Shavers fight didn't end well for him either

Ellis didn't make it out of the first round. He wasn't ahead of anything.
