Outstanding final record and one of the more exciting fighters of his era.
Is he Hall of Fame worthy? I'm on the fence.

Well it is the hall of "fame" not the hall of "skill".
And of course....Ali did have fame....so he's got that one covered I guess.

If Muhammad Ali can get in, so does Johnny Tapia.
If they didn't put Muhammad Ali in the Boxing Hall of Fame they might as well shut the whole thing down cuz it wouldn't mean sh*t.
Someone else said that once about a different Hall of Fame, I forget who, but I think it applies accurately here.

This is why I hate il duce, as an aside. He ruins threads. We get it, he hates Ali. Isn't it enough bs about him at some point? Does every BOTP thread have to turn into: "what can I say about Ali that's outlandish today?"
As to the actual subject matter, I do think Tapia make it in, and I think he should based on his resume and notoriety.

The problems with that, two wrongs don't make a right. You would have to put in everyone that isn't in that was better than Gatti who is not in already. And Gatti is certainly not the worst Hall of Famer either.
All that can be done is put the best fighters available. So the question really is, is Johnny Tapia one of them? I don't think he quite makes it. Off of the top of my head, Eddie Mustapha Muhammad and Rodrigo Valdez are more deserving and are long overdue. I'm sure there other fighters as well that were better.

Better question is why people place any credence to the IBHOF in the first place.

It's just a place for great fighters to be remembered years after their fans and the people who saw them in their primes would have forgotten them. There's definitely some people that don't belong in there, and some people that do belong that aren't there, but the concept of a Boxing Hall of Fame is a worthy one in my view. For great fighters who's fistic glory days are behind them, it's the closest they come to winning one more Championship and being remembered by a wider audience.
It means a lot to the fighters that receive the honor and it gives the fans a place that they can meet several of the fighters they admire, meet them and shake their hand and tell them how much they enjoyed watching them.
A bit too much gets made of it from time to time I admit, but overall it's a very good thing for the sport and the men that dedicate their lives to it.

But where do you draw the line? How do you justify not inducting certain boxers when their are already boxers that perhaps aren't as worthy?

I understand what you're saying, but I don't have an answer for that. It's just left up to the people that induct the guys I suppose.

If Muhammad Ali can get in, so does Johnny Tapia.
Only a total imbecile could discover a parallel between Muhammad Ali and Johnny Tapia.
Congratulations, sir, you are walking proof that Darwin's theory of evolution is incorrect.
