Was watching some old fights the other day and Donovan Boucher was one of the boxers, anyone remember him on these shores?
He came over to beat Gary Jacobs, and then went on to make 3 defenses here of the Commonwealth title. Was a good boxer to watch.
His world title shot probably came a little bit past his best, it was on the Benn v Eubank II bill. He fought Espana and was stopped in the 10th.
Found this recent article on him, looks like life is treating him well, nice to see.

Think I remember him beating Laing?

I remember him... very vaguely. he could punch a bit, couldn't he?

Saw him fight Jacobs , I think in Motherwell, clever ,clever boxer.

Got a few of his fights on tape, he beat Jacobs and Laing and I clearly remember him giving Mickey Hughes a bit of a lesson, albeit he was always looking dangerous (he had laid out Jacobs with a peach of a left hook) and then got knocked out the ring against Loughran before taking a pasting against Espana.

There's not much up on youtube though, although there's a fight of his against a Dwarf.

this may sound mad but his name is linked in my mind with ensley bingham. i have no fvcking clue why.

He was more quick handed than heavy handed, but he could certainly hit hard enough.

You're not thinking of Mpush Mkambi are you? Had a similar sort of career pattern - Came over to the UK as a relative unknown quantity, scored a handful of upset wins over our top guys then got clowned at world level.

meh, i don't friggin know. i have names like Ensley Bingham, Donovan Boucher and Adrian Dodson all tumbledrying through the section of my brain labelled 'late 80's/90s guys who were okay but not world level'. i think in my memory they have sort of folded into a composite picture of a balck/ mixed-race boxer with a good left hook.

I think I remember a black and white still of him flat on his back on the canvas. Knocked out in 2 rounds somewhere or other.

It's probably the South African dude, he beat Dodson, considered a bit of an upset at the time and they had a rematch where he pasted him even more and then KO'd Bingham and Foster in quick time. I have a recollection that he dwarfed these guys but boxrec says he's under 5'10" so maybe not.

Same with Sebastiaan Rothmann - Did the same thing, trounced our guys and did ok at fringe world level but got flattened at the top level. His KO loss to Bell is brutal (although he was roughly level on the cards).

It's all about "levels" as they say.

Mpush whatever his name. He seemed really dangerous, then went down pretty meekly to Brian Magee at supermiddle ...a win Brian seemed to get zero credit for. Rothman was handy, but then his chin gave up and everyone started knocking him out. Weird how things work out sometimes. Two more imports who should have achieved more are David Tettteh, who stopped Billy Schwer in 1995 and then hardly got and opportunities there after. And also, In-Jin Chi, who many will remember.

Yeah, whatever happened to Tetteh? He won on cuts (I think) but was giving Schwer a bit of a savaging at the time of the stoppage after coming on strong in the last few rounds.

I remember him fighting the Canadian kid who was on a hot streak, Irwin, but nothing after that?

I guess if we're throwing names in the hat, Ajif Djelti has to be mentioned.

He lost on PTS to Irwin twice. Hometown decisions really. And then quit. Sad really he didn't get more big fights. Ajif was 42 or something and really handy.

How about Terry Southerland, who boxed Shea Neary's ears off before walking onto one.

I remember going to Widnes to watch the Naas Scheepers fight (which was way closer than a lot of people made out), with Dunne beating Djelti on the UC, but only a vague recollection of the Southerland fight. I seem to remember he was on the brink though, cut?

I watched in on TV, it was a bad cut and Shea pleaded for 1 more round, he got Terry with a big left hook. Neary was a good fighter.

edit: though was this the man I was thinking of? Did Neary get cut in the first round; I thought I remember him getting a bad cut 2nd or 3rd round and the ref near to stopping it and then Shea knocking him out with a single very hard left hook. May have been another man.
