benn looking a Toneys record, its a whose who of great fights and big names.

But....

Whilst I am aware of his deterioration, Toney still has slick skills and is very very durable. So.... how did Lebedev 'white wash' him? lebedev is good, but certainly no 'sugar ray'....

and more amazingly...how did Lucas browne beat him unanimous points 118-111 etc????

I cant get my head round the browne thing, yes Lucas did beat towers recently (I was gutted for big Ritchie but felt Ritchie should have put it on Browne from the opening bell, whilst I appreciate the ingle tactics of moving and spoiling and waiting for Browne to become frustrated and to 'walk onto one') but all I saw from browne was a club fighter skill level and a big right hook!!.... surely that is not good enough to school the great JT, anyone seen the fight?

Could it be possible that Toneys purse included the result?

i think it was the lebedev fight that was on box-nation

tony hurt his leg in 2nd round, he actually got surgery a couple weeks later.

if this is same fight im thinking of

Ok, but how did Browne outpoint him? who were the judges?...... crocodile Dundee, rolf harris and Jason Donovan?..... or stevie wonder, ray Charles and peters n lee (the blind man not the fit milf)

didnt see that one but i think Toney has lost all ambition and probably just outworked and happy to get through the rounds without taking much solid punches

he may get the benifit of the Prizefighter judges though just to keep the Main Attraction in the tourney untill the final.

Michael sprott would beat Toney i would suspect now

James isn't the same highly skilled boxer he was in his prime and he's boxing men far fresher, far younger, naturally bigger and often thousands of miles from home; the promoter is paying for the name of Toney to turn up as his name will look good on the home fighters record, the judges and ref provided will not be nuetral but will have had some dealings with the promoter and will know which result is most beneficial; it's not such a mystery really.

Toney has a low workrate and his lack of reach really limits his options against much bigger men. Such a shame he should never have campaigned at heavyweight.

It is a shame and I can remember being amazed at how he beat Holyfield, that was skill.

Even in his prime he wasn't a high workrate fighter. So long into his decline, and against men so much bigger, he really throws very little.

How did Toney lose to Browne? By being grossly overweight and going through the motions. Nothing to do with the judges. Browne wanted to win, Toney didn't.

I was surprised by how bad Browne looked against Towers. All he had to was throw a few punches and the fight was over. Which he eventually did. (Towers didn't look like he was carrying out any kind of game plan, just froze like a poor man's Audley Harrison).

It's age, fitness etc. You never lose technically ability (in any sport). It's a bit like saying, John McEnroe is technically better than Andy Murray at Tennis, but would lose every set due to age/fitness

I get what you're saying and technical ability is closely allied to quickness of thought and the eye, also the muscle memory does fade - things are not as coordinated, the timing is out and the ability has faded. If a shot boxer shadow boxes he is all over the place.

The fact that we're interested in Toney in Prizefighter is a direct indictment of just how bad the Klitschkos are. Toney's last "performance" at heavyweight was a tight loss to Sam Peter that some felt he won. Sam Peter was always dreadful; the only reason anyone thought otherwise was because he pushed Wlad close, but what an indictment of Wlad! Peter's prior big result was beating Jeremy Williams!

the reason I am interested in james toney is that he was such a great fighter and you can't quite forget that even now the style reminds you of what he was.

That's the answer. I saw his fights vs Browne and Lebedev. He is a counter puncher who in ring years as well as normal years is absolutely ancient. He just doesn't do enough to win rounds. Occasional flashes of brilliance - yes, but he can't keep up the workrate. Which is perfectly natural for a man of his age and condition.
