Dream Fight Upsets II - Pernell Whittaker

Following on from my all-time great thread here...

I nominate Pernell Whittaker
Give me a fighter who is widely accepted as being not as good as Whittaker but who has a good chance of causing an upset.
Before the usual nonsense...they don't have to definitely beat him. You just have to form a decent argument is all...

I'd pick Terry Norris to beat him at 154. I think he was fast enough, hit hard enough and skilled enough to land on Sweet Pea more often than his usual opponents, plus I could see him dropping Whitaker at least once in the fight.
154 obviously wouldn't be Sweet Pea's best fighting weight, but this fight was actually discussed at one time and I believe Norris would've won it. Legitimately

In my opinion McCallum at 154 could beat Pernell.

I think McCallum would have mullered him, but he's just as much an ATG as Pea is, fighting at his best weight, and with the style to apply the pressure. He's like a better, and MUCH bigger Chavez.
Let me be a bit more controversial; how about Zack Padilla to beat him at Jr Welter? To beat the Pea, you have to either knock him out, or throw so much leather that even his legendary evasiveness isn't enough. Padilla sure could throw a lot of punches....

Controversial to the maximum would be Tim Bradley - Don't see him being fazed at all by missing more than the normal amount, and he's sure to throw all fight, probably making Pea look to negative to pick up a pts W.
If not win, he'd run him close for certain.

I like Meldrick Taylor with the caveat that Meldrick was a great fighter who in my opinion was badly managed and he has suffered because of this.

Wlad. If weight classes aren't a matter, as they seem not to be given the answers.
With that said, permaban the guy that suggested Bradley.

Anyways: Duilio Loi

I think a fight between him and Loi, or him and Loche would be interesting...but I imagine Whitaker would beat them both.
I don't like to think of someone as good as Whitaker getting beat in a fight where he is competitive.
Why?
Because judges seemed to impose that on him unfairly enough as it was.
A fight I'd love to see at Lightweight though would be against Duran.
And it's the only fight I can imagine where the odds would actually be against him.
But I wasn't suppose to pick that one...it's against the rules.
I'll keep thinkin'.

Ok, here's my best offering...and it's probably out of bounds as well...What about Wilfredo Benitez at Super Light?

Buzz what do you say about Whitaker vs Pryor at 140 pounds?

Benitez is as good a shout as could be asked for.
I also agree for a permaban for the fruitcake who said Bradley...
I'll say Rosario. His losses are knockouts mostly. He did okay against boxers, except for Camacho, who came out of that fight a new man...
If Roger Mayweather can catch him and drop him, Rosario, who is smarter, tougher, and faster (not to mention harder-punching), can possibly do the same.

Very fair question...one I should recuse myself of. I'm on the record with open bias against Mr Pryor.....I feel I am justified because of my keen observance of him as a local fighter in the Cincinnatti area when I lived not far away in St Louis. So many people consider my opinions on Pryor as being rather....Ill Duce'd.
But....my official opinion is that Whitaker embarrasses him badly....and I would pay to see it.

Rosario is a good outside bet.

You know....I think you have to go back to a fighter who has little film on him, to even imagine a serious threat.
Those guys can more easily be "imagineered" toward a genuine victory over Pernell in our minds.
Beating him is almost impossible. Now if you get through a fight with him.....and you have shown some sort of "hunter's instinct" you do have a better chance than you probably deserve of getting a draw or even a win.

With the wrong 3 judges at ringside, the late Hector Camacho.

We're talking about a prime Whitaker here, so no. Hurtado ain't doing shit.

Alexis Arguello

Arguello is in big trouble stylistically against Whitaker. He simply has a puncher's chance only.

I said Loi because from what we know he was a bull strong southpaw switch hitter who was very crafty with his approach to pressure fighting. Anyone who gets the better of Carlos Ortiz (another superb ring mechanic) two out of three had to have had something special going on, especially seeing as he wasn't a big puncher.
Although Ortiz clearly knocked Loi down in one of their fights (which fight it was escapes me, but I've seen the footage), which he didn't get credit for. It's possible there could've been some hometown cooking involved, but then again I've heard from other sources (can't really comment on the credibility at the moment, it's been a while) that Loi deserved all 3 decisions. Not so sure about all that, but either way, it's clear the guy was an exceptional fighter.

A few darkhorse picks:
Lou Ambers- Do it all beast. One of the most underrated fighters ever.
Sammy Angott- Seemed like this guy was a slickster's nightmare.
Bob Montgomery- Similar to Loi (apart from the southpaw bit), in that he was said to have been a very crafty, difficult to time, crouching pressure fighter.
Ismael Laguna- If only because I'd love to have seen Whitaker in with another slickster with top notch skills and even better speed.
Tippy Larkin- Interesting darkhorse here, seeing as there's no footage. It's said that if this guy had a chin, he'd still be champ today. Seems like it'd be damn near impossible to outbox him from what I've read given his technical brilliance and length. You either KO'd him or swarmed him. Would be interesting to see what kind of approach Whitaker used.

Great premise, we all sit down here and offer definitive outcomes based off of resumes like they're etched in stone when all of us have been wrong week after week picking fights throughout our lives. Could Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Sal Sanchez? He damn sure could
Whitaker is a tough one at his best because he was damn near perfect. I don't think you're looking for an Ike Williams kind of answer, so I'm going to take a swing for the fences and say Ray Mancini. I actually never cheered for him, not sure why, but I think Mancini is really unappreciated. Nobody dismantled Ramirez as soundly as he did and even coming off a huge layoff he dealt with Camacho's feet and speed. I wouldn't bet on him, but I could envision a scenario where Ray gets a flash knockdown or two and presses the pace enough to get the nod.
Half on topic, my all time call is Witherspoon over Ali.
