There's a very thought provoking and illuminating article in this months Boxing Monthly by Terry Dooley; (Dead Mouse). I really enjoy this sort of journalism - well played and I have to say that it is brave of the boxers to put their heads above the parapet.
Respect

There was an excellent piece on the same thing in Boxing News a couple of month ago.

I read that one as well; it really opened my eyes - I changed my opinion about Ashley Sexton in particular - I'd imagined him to not have had a thought in his head for some reason (blond hair, suntan, gob full of teeth) and he came across as a very decent and thoughtful fellow. I thought he was a flash harry but really hope he does well now. (is that very fickle?)

Yeah makes you wonder doesnt it. An illness a lot of people will suffer & for a boxer once you have retired it is hard to replace the highs.

It was a very good article.as was the piece in the boxing news. There's a lot of things that can trigger depression and for me I'm still trying to figure what brings on my dark feelings.everybody is different Theres not much that can be done really.getting slagged off, feeling lonely and away from your mates and the good times in the boozer.and not getting rewarded nowhere near as much as you should Is all part of the game. I've been retired for a couple of monthes and still get my really bad days so maybe its nothing to do with boxing.

Ive not read the article (Link anyone? )
But.... Depression is something that ive had to deal with indirectly through my mrs (had bad childhood and its something im still trying to help to fix 10 years into our relationship)..... Its hard to live with someone who suffers from depression, especially when im more of a positive person.... But it did make more aware of the signs etc , which i spotted in one of my boxers, one who had already agreed to turn pro and is a big puncher who would have excited people, but the decision to turn pro was postponed, as things stand the issue of turning pro hasnt been raised recently, he locks himself away for days and we have to go around to check on him etc, mentally he may just not be capable of dealing with the stresses of being pro and we have to have him boxing as often as possible, if hes not boxing and has no reason to train he just sinks into a downer, but because hes known as a puncher hes hard to match now, hes 25 so he can delay turning pro if needed, its frustrating for me though as i want to be able to look after his interests and sometimes i wonder if he needs to be away from boxing, but then i worry about what might happen if hes not in the gym and makes no contact with the outside world.
Depression isnt a nice issue to deal with, but i imagine that in a boxer it can be an even worse combination than normal, we all have bad days but its a case of recognising whats normal and whats beyond that...

It caused agraphobia. Then when I did try and leave the house I would have big panic attacks which made me feel really bad.

I still struggle with it now as it first occured when I was 18 and went on till I was 26. I lost a large part of my 20's. The problem is I think about the time ive missed out on and things ive missed out on and I feel even worse.

I'm a lot like that too. I used to love going out with my pals on the booze. When I did, it would never be without the white powder, no less than 3grams on a night out; Christ knows the amount of speed and pills in the early days. Maybe that has f*** my head up. Now I get panic attacks and would rather stay in. I go to the gym and work, but I can't be arsed now to talk b*****s all night to wrong'uns. I'm up and down more times than a yo yo, but boxing training helps me!
People phone me to come out but I swerve it. Work home gym.
