Anyone else think the referee Harry Gibbs is a bit over the top with his 'unbiased' congratulations to Kaylor?

I think he was encouraging Kaylor to be gracious to avoid crowd trouble to be honest - looks funny though.

I never thought of that Jeff. It's still a hell of a fight though. I thought Christie would go all the way when I first saw him.

Yes brilliant. Looking back though I see such a gap in the quality of domestic boxing. Better fights back then but better standards now, IMO

I'd go along with that mate. Some crackers. It's strange looking back at people's careers and how they did against my expectations. I remember watching a lad from Darlington called Alan Hall in the amatuers and (if memory serves) he won three ABA titles. I thought he'd go all the way as a pro. he didn't.

I think Allan won 2 ABA titles and his brother Michael did the same. Good fighters both of them.

Michael won once (in 1995 at welter) and then lost to a Ricky Hatton at light welter in '97.

One of my favourite fights ever.

The build up to it was ever better!

I loved Mark Kaylor back in the day, plus I was partial to Christie, as I thought he was a decent prospect.

Great memories.

Gibbs was mindful of the bad blood in the crowd as well as that between the fighters and was quite rightly calling for restraint in the celebrations.

Saw Christie at the Bloomsbury Crest Hotel early on and thought he'd go all the way. Then just round the corner from where I lived in Hoxton I saw him get flattened by Jose Seys, in a round!! Shocker at the time but he did look far too relaxed going in.

Gibbs in my opinion was the best ref I ever saw and maintain to this day if he had been around and available for Holyfield Tyson 2 we would have seen a proper fight.

How did the referee influence Tyson's decision to meltdown when faced with the fact that he knew he could not win & commit the most cowardly act seen in a boxing ring?

Tyson might have used the excuse about Holyfield headbutting him, but we all know that was BS.

Tyson committed far worse fouls in fights before & after he fought Holyfield & no referee on Earth would have made any difference.

I was at Wembley that night a great atmosphere, big fan of errol's so I was gutted on the
night, tremendous fight though, unfortunately it was a case of who had the best chin and that
was kaylor.
Was also there the night he lost to seys as well, saw all his fights in London, saw him at buncey's road show a couple of years back in bethnall green had a chat with him he seems to be doing ok.

You may call BS but watching the fight that clearly wasn't the case. One thing is for certain Tyson wouldn't have had TWO bites at Holyfield's ear.

You're quite right though it was without doubt the most cowardly act I can recall seeing in ANY sport. I just felt that a stronger referee may have held it together better. Mills Lane, in fairness, was a victim of his own unfounded reputation.

My girlfriend at the time knew allegedly and he gave her four free tickets to the Kaylor v Gumbs show at Ally Pally. He asked her who I was tipping and she told him Gumbs

So there we were me, my mate and the two girlfriends as the only four white faces on the entire Gumbs supporting side of Ally Pally. Surprising how enthusiastically we cheered for Gumbs

Point is there was still a lot of segregation in the early eighties in boxing and those in charge were quite keen to keep a lid on fighters geeing up the racist or "tribal football fan" mentality.

Things are generally better now with the exception of Barnsley t'other week.


p.s. As a footnote not a bit of bother from Gumb's supporters even in defeat,total gentlemen.

Ive often thought if errol would have gone further in todays market( i know his chin would have always been in question) but with sky under Eddie for instance do you think he'd havr gone further titles wise?

Maybe not, check the super fight between Carlos Zarate and Wilfredo Gomez ( surely there's never been two more impressive records in a big clash ) Harry completely loses control as Gomez repeatedly fouls Zarate, hits him while down and on the break, and Gibbs is floundering and let's him get away with blue murder. It's a shocker. .

What a fantastic night that was - I was gutted to miss it. was in Belgium at the time, and listening on the BBC radio, which was very poor quality - bloody signal going in and out... I'd just heard that Christine had been floored in the first - Then heard a firework going off in the arena: it was bonfire night.
I loved Errol Christie, what the hell ever happened to that chin - there was no sign of him being fragile, when he was one of the best amateurs we've ever seen.

And Gumbs/Kaylor was another Classico.
Mark gets up off the floor and nails a shocked Roy with his first punch. turning the fight around.

Mark still lives in LA.

Seemed like a fast count by the ref there, Christie seemed to nod towards the corner as if to say that he was alright, then tried to get up in time, I thought the ref though was trying to get Kaylor to go over to Christie and make up, after pre fight hatred.

that fight started race riots at my school , not as in we hated each other more to do with two groups of 13 year olds picking a side like being a football fan .... it was strange as i ended up fighting my mate .thank f@ck thing have changed in the last 30 years ....

yeh hall had 54 bouts..won 50....he was just 15!! in his nxt bout he beat darren mccarrick!!. 2 yrs later he lost his 1st aba final to micheal ayers.
some talent indeed!
