When the title shifted into Burns's hands, it is ironic that one of his first title defense opponents (Bill Squire) originally challenged Jeffries to come out of retirement as the worldwide view was that Jeffries was still the true champion of them world. When Jeff laughed in Squires face, the Australian then headed after Burns. Jeff did show up to the fight though, as the referee and dwarfed both Squires and Burns and most the members of the crowd.

Jack Johnson would have beaten Jeffries at any point of Jim's career.

Not So Fast
Most underestimate 'James J. Jeffries' improved boxing skills after his first bouts with Robert Fitzsimmons
and James Corbett.
From 1902 thru 1904, Jack Johnson ain't running 'The Boilermaker' thru any old Alfalfa Mill.
Johnson was a defensive master and also threw great combinations. Jeffries was slow and predictable.

'PROMOTER TEX RICKARD OFFERS JAMES J. JEFFRIES $30,000 FOR RETURN'
Planned Event for Goldfield, Nevada - sometime in 1907.
Fight Promoter Tex Rickard has offered James J. Jeffries $30,000 to fight both Tommy Burns
and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien on the 'same day'.
The Promoter has come up with an interesting setting. Since Jeffries is still by far the best
Heavyweight in the World {despite his announced retirement in May 1905}.
Tex Rickard has come up with a venue where Jeffries would fight #1 Challenger Jack O'Brien in the
Afternoon. Then challenge 'in name only' Champion - Tommy Burns in the Evening.
Rickard has said that he has put up $50,000 - to be split anyway that the fighters agree. I figure
Jeffries to receive $30,000 - Jack O'Brien $8000 and Tommy Burns $12,000.
Rickard added, that this is the only way that Tommy Burns would have a chance against Jeffries.
The battle with Jack O'Brien might wear Jeffries down, and give the much smaller Champion a fighting
chance.

No, it's something. A defeat. Prime Johnson smashes prime Jeffries.

And how do you know that without ever seeing either of these gents in person.
How do you base your conclusion................
The same conclusion you use to say Dempsey beats Ali.
