Did somebody mention there is a book coming out on Charley Burley?

There are two recent books out on Burley.

The first by Allen Rosenfeld came out towards the the end of 2003 and the second (which Ric's link is about) by Harry Otty which has only been out for a few weeks.

Both are excellent books but for me Otty's is a much easier read.

I had heard of Burley before but I am reading Archie Moores book at the moment and he speaks very highly of him,and with some sadness, so i decided to find out more. What is it with the boxers from Pittsburgh, Greb, Zivic, Conn...

Yes, the Harry Otty book is limited to 300 copies.

You should find an annotation inside saying which number you have (eg 127/300).

I bought the Rosenfeld book a few weeks ago through Amazon. I was hoping for a complete, detailed, colorful account of Burley's life, but no luck. What a disappointment. The book is virtually unreadable. Five hundred plus pages of information, but there's no organization, no editing, no narrative I can find. The author wanders all over the place. There's just big chunks of old newspaper articles pasted together, joined by clumsily worded passages by the author. I hate to down it, because obviously a lot of time and effort went into the book, but maybe Mr. Rosenfeld should have turned over his material to a professional to complete. It's a shame because Burley sure deserves a bio.

It was signed also by author, fantastic looking book, just hope it is as good a read.
Though must add that the photo’s could have been of a better quality.

I am happy that those that have bought the Burley book have been pleased with my efforts. If it is not too much trouble for those that have read it to post a review on Amazon, I would be most gratefull.

With regard to the quality of the photographs, all I can say is that I had a choice to make about the paper that was used and I had to go with the most economical. The hike in the retail price of the book just couldn't be justified by slightly better quality paper for the photographs.

The photographs themselves are excellent quality - apart from a couple of newspaper articles (for obvious reasons) - the others are first generation and are from the original vintage photographs. Many of the photos of Charley Burley later in his career are from the Burley family and are the general quality that you would expect from a family 'snap'. Those of Charley at the Hall of Fame with Henry Armstrong ans Ike Williams fall into this category.

There are also photos from Burley's amateur career that were regular snaps and not professional images as some of the later pictures are. Promotional shots of Burley and the other fighters in the book, Eddie Booker, Lloyd Marshall, Jack Chase, Holman Williams and action shots of Bert Lytell V 'Oakland' Billy Smith are of professional quality.

What I will say is that copies of the photographs (those that I own the rights to - details in the appendix) can be obtained by anyone that bought the book directly from me.

Most that have checked out any information on the book will know that this account of Burley's life and career was put together with the assistance of his family and friends. In a sense it is the 'official' or 'authorised' biography. As such it contains many insights into Charley Burley the man as well as Charley Burley the fighter.
