Watching the next Copperbox show fall apart

Am starting this thread out of curiosity, it's about 8 weeks out and this is the advertised bill at this point in time;

Chisora vs TBA for the European heavyweight championship
Saunders vs TBA for the British & Commonwealth middleweight championships
Nathan Cleverley vs Daniel Ammann for the Commonwealth cruiserweight championship
Bradley Skeete vs TBA for the English welterweight championship
Liam Walsh vs Gary Sykes for the British & Commonwealth super featherweight championships
Frank Buglioni vs TBA for the WBO European supermiddleweight championship

The last Copperbox bill fell apart like no other domestic bill in 2013 and I wonder how this Feb 15th 2014 show will go. It seems to me like the priorities are all wrong with the promoter, instead of making a headline fight and then working the show around it, he sets a date, books in his fighters vs TBA's, and then makes a series of announcements about the opposition, pull outs, and replacement opponents. It will be interesting to see who ends up in the opposite corners facing Delboy and Saunders come fight night. I realise he needs to give lots of time to his ticket selling undercard fighters.

I wonder if the first opponent announced for Delboy will be the eventual opponent come fight night. Last time I think the opponent changed 3 times. I suspect the money or terms just aren't good enough to get decent, credible world class opposition to turn up. It would genuinely cost a lot of money to stage a European heavyweight title fight and any challenger worth his salt is going to want enough notice to prepare properly.

The Walsh v Sykes is a big enough fight for this show anyway. Looks like a good show to me. 2 big fights names and some big names still to be announce what more do you want? Put it this way I would rather watch Walsh v Sykes than Hall v Malinga.

They have already said Walsh-Sykes is on at York Hall in February. I forget the actual date.

the copperbox shows have been awful so far

they are the biggest disapointment of 2013

as eddie says london does not work in boxing anymore

Surely it comes down to the fight, though. The problem I see is that the fights hosted have been almost entirely FW Fighter v TBA (Saunders v Ryder is a notable exception) or Two non London fighters facing off. I'm certain that a couple of the Londoners in decent fights would draw a decent crowd. The Copperbox isn't a massive venue, but its appeal is in its atmosphere which is unique in London and pretty much perfect for boxing. What about Buglioni v Eubank Jnr or even James DeGale? Chisora v Audley? Mitchell Smith v Ben Jones?

Not sure I buy that last part. Obviously if you put on a shit card though, it's not going to sell.

Thank you - the first casualty of the show looks to be chalked up - that's a terrific start and we're not yet into the new year. Walsh-Sykes is listed on B o x N a t i o n as being part of this Copperbox show, as of this morning.

I agree with another poster, about the quality of that pairing - it is fight of the year material. They've announced the Copperbox show, with a load of TBA's, and this Grade A evenly balanced domestic scrap on the undercard. Definitely a fight worth paying to see.

Yes, but say you bought a ticket on the strength of walsh vs sykes, you're stuck with the ticket and the fight now takes place elsewhere. You might get Chisora vs an 11-0 Italian (4th choice of opponent) in the main event........

I thought it was moved from York Hall to the Copperbox.

Wherever it's held, it's a cracking fight.

If they could get Chisora vs Wilder on, and actually signed, I would be there myself on the night. Derek's last fight was meant to be against "significant" opposition and it turned out to be not the case. No opponent has been announced thus far, but I hope they push the boat out and get somebody decent. I would hate to see all the money go on the HD broadcast launch, only leaving a few quid for some unknown heavyweight to come in at six days notice again. Delboy is now 6th in the WBC rankings, and if Stiverne and Arreola square off for the vacant title, only Wilder, Jennings and Perez will be above him. It would be good to see Delboy matched against an opponent whereby a win would advance him up the WBC rankings. Lucas Browne is at no.11, that would be a good match up !

I wouldn't buy tickets. I watch most English fights on the TV so I get both they shows on allegedly in Feb so can't complain for my £20... I was told it was moved to the Copperbox though.

The first one was a brilliant show on paper, the fight's just didn't quite come off and provide the excitement that was expected.

It certainly didn't help that as the excitement was building they scheduled the Chudinov fight followed by GAvin v Barnes which were both complete snorefests. Almost 2 hours later and the more intruiging fights had lost their appeal through a combination of tiredness, drunkenness and cynicism. The whole show didn't finish until gone 1am either which is never a good thing for a domestic show.

My opinion of these copperbox shows, is that there is definitely room for improvement on the matchmaking.

Some mockney ticket seller with his side-parting army cheering him on against some Pole is not my idea of a fight. They are 80/20 fights at the very best and that's being generous.

No sooner has their man won, they all completely vacate for the bar area, standing around on the sniff and repeating the word "Mug".

There's only been the BJS vs Ryder fight that's been any good. And then they waited until the atmosphere was absolutely stone dead and the TV audience at home had fallen asleep in their armchairs before commencing the ring walk. They could have really gone to town with that excellent trade fight, but they completely missed a trick I feel.

Bunce, Lillis, and especially Barry Jones etc do a decent job - but the officials have been terrible. Chisora vs Malik Scott, Chisora's last fight too.

Overall the content is a plain baked potato with no butter. Not even a spoon of beans on top.

It's a plate of boiled rice on it's own. It needs proper topping - like Chisora vs Wilder as previously mentioned - not a dung heap of WBO 'euro' titles.

The most entertaining thing to come out of the Copperbox, was the press fight between Barry Hearn and Ayling over who had permission to park their Bentley's in the disabled spot. That was a great bit of fun. Otherwise it's all a bit meh (so far)

Maybe they pull their finger out to promote the HD launch.

Simple mate just pay on the door if you like what's on show on the other hand if you don't like the fare on offer don't go this way you can check the card on the day before you she'll out your hard earned cash

Point taken. I stopped buying tickets for this promoter's show years ago, although I've been paying for B Nation since day one (and think its fantastic value for money). The purpose of the thread was more towards a comparison between what's advertised at this point in time, and what fans (including subscribers) eventually get on the night, because Copperbox 2 started out as a Rolls Royce, and on the night a clapped out old banger turned up.

The comment above about a mockney ticket seller vs a pole is a belter, by the way :TU: :TU: :TU:

Progress report; Cleverly is off - apparently fighting 2 weeks earlier in Monte Carlo.

Crazy risk they're taking there! Ive watched guy he'll be fighting and he's talented for sure and can really punch! He's a bit of a midget for the weight class but a very good fighter. I get the feeling that Nathan has thought fornicate it, Il give this a go and if i can pull it off then great but if not then il call it a day.

Agreed. His one punch wipe out of Eric Fields is awesome (20 mins into the video below). He is #3 by the WBA so Nathan would gate crash the world ratings with a win.
