You know, a recent article in the Detroit News revealed that many whites view the Joe Louis 'Fist' sculpture in Detroit as an anti-white statement and have defended the actions of two men who splashed white paint over the black sculpture in the city in February.
The incident happened after the February 16 killing of two Detroit police officers.
The perpetrators of the sculpture defacing, who were charged with malicious destruction of property, left a photograph at the scene which read: "courtesy of the Fighting Whities."
The men contended their actions were not racially motivated, but that they were making a general protest against crime and violence in Detroit.
"I don't condone the vandalism to Joe Louis' Fist — but I understand it," said Detroit resident Gordon Neumann in the newspaper. "As a white man, I surmise to the black population of Detroit, the sculpture expresses solidarity, power, the will to succeed against adversity — all admirable traits.
"But, subliminally, that big, hard fist says, 'fight, fight, fight.' Perhaps it's time for the people of Detroit to evolve from our history — can we get beyond totems of fighting?
"Could we extend two of those fingers of Joe Louis' fist into a peace sign?"
What a joke? Political correctness gone mad.

What a load of bollocks.
I'm white, but I view the Joe Louis statue as a tribute to the sport of Boxing as well as the great man himself.
Neumann obviously hasnt got a clue why the statue was erected in the first place and he sounds like a complete prick.

It's sad that a man who donated three of his world heavyweight title purses to Army relief (and was later charged for the tax on them by the IRS), is treated like this today in his home city. Nay, it's sickening. Every boxing fan knows what Joe Louis' fist means. It means power, success, perfection, history. It's got nothing to do with race.

That's right bennie, I just love that quote. It's from the 1950's and sums up the way black America looked to Joe Louis as a real hero of his times.
