Monroe and Hart were all the talk in Philadelphia, and had been anointed as the future of the division.
Marvin had different ideas.
By the way...that info you put at the end of your statement was encrypted very well.
Some will not recognize that when decoded it reveals further scandals and topics that are too sensitive to reveal to those who are not part of the secret decoder ring society. I appreciated the further inside scoop!

Alvin Phillips (New Orleans} ~ 30-10-1 {11 KO's}
vs.
Willie Monroe {Philadelphia} ~ 20-1-0 {16 KO's}
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Fight Analysis
A 'third' time these two will go at it.
23 year-old Willie Monroe is coming off his first loss, a disputed 'Hometown' 10-Round Split-Decision loss to
World-Ranked Nessim Max Cohen in France. 'The Worm' has been inactive since that bout {March 27th},
and the 4 1/2-month lay-off may effect him.
24 year-old local - Alvin 'Pop Pop' Phillips is coming an 'Upset' 10-Round Decision over highly regarded Detroit
Light-Middleweight - Ronnie Harris. The 5' 10" boxer-puncher, is a an active fighter and rarely takes time off
from the Ring.
These boys fought 'twice before. The 1st-Time back on January 18, 1971 in Philadelphia, and the 2nd-Time
on January 15, 1972 in New Orleans. Both bouts were competitive, but with Monroe getting the edge both
times because of a better left jab.
The Fight
Willie Monroe got off to a good start in Round 1, and appeared to be on his way to a third win over Alvin Phillips.
'The Worm' followed up well in Rounds 2 and 3, as he repeatedly scored with his long left-jab.
But in Round 5, Willie started to slow down and tire, and Phillips was able to close the gap and score with right-hand
leads. From that point on, many of the Rounds were closely fought, as Phillips stayed close not allowing Willie the
needed room to score with his long punches from the outside.
Phillips was busier down the stretch, as Willie was holding more and loading up for one-punch.
Scorecards
* Ernest Cojoe........ 5-3-2 {Alvin Phillips}
* Herman Dutriez.... 6-3-1 {Willie Monroe}
* Pete Giarusso....... 7-1-2 {Alvin Phillips}
"Phillips Out-Works 'The Worm', Scores Split-Decision Win"
Wiilie Monroe,
"Another hometown Decision. Same thing happened to me in France. I got off to a good lead, and thought
I had enough Points to win. One Judge gives it to me 6-3-1, and the other has me losing 7-1-2. You figure it out."
Alvin Phillips,
"I won, Willie stopped fighting after the 4th-Round. It's a 10-Round fight, not a 4-Rounder."
Its amazing that it was mentioned that his 4 1/2 month lay off might affect him. That's the usual lay off for boxers now

When Willie 'The Worm' Monroe stayed active, he was a sharp fighter.[/quote]
I just meant that it shows how times have changed. Good thread on an interesting fighter Ill Duce.

Back then, any fighter who was out of the Ring more than 4-Months, was 'Semi-Retired'......... ;;-)
Now 4-Months is like a short afternoon nap....... :(
Exactly. Did it make them better fighters though? I think it must have in some cases. Guys with bad hands benefit from the longer layoffs now. Some decent fighters have been pretty active relatively this year. I hope it continues.

With the small fight purses {$2000 to $3000} for the Club Fights, you had to fight more often
and 'on-the-road'.
Lots of competition in Philadelphia, and only so many fights to go around. A highly-regarded
Willie Monroe had to go to New Orleans, Tampa, Houston and Paris, France to get some decent
money, and he was a 'Stable-Mate' of Champion - Joe Frazier as well..........
Even the prospects had a tough road

Thanks Il Duce for replying to my message about how good Willie "The Worm" Monroe was. It's true Monroe was trend to weakened in the later rounds. Also, he could be pressure and out-muscled after tired and didn't respond well after taking some shots to the chin. Well, look at his rematches with "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. I watched on the third Hagler vs. Monroe fight on my old VHS and Hagler knocked Monroe down silly with his devastating right hook in the second round. Monroe beats the count, but wobbled around and the referee stopped the fight.

Il Duce,
I would please like to know how good was Eugene "Cyclone" Hart? I know that he had a monstrous left hook one of the hardest left hooks in middleweight history as one of his strengths and was his power punch. Also, his other strengths was his aggressiveness and power. His style was sleek power-puncher-slugger. One of his weaknesses that his chin was fair that his 8 out of his 9 losses were knockouts.
How good was his skills, left jab, right hand, speed, stamina, body attack, defense, durability, footwork and ring general?
