Lets say Joe Calzaghe wins is IBF fight at Light Heavyweight aginst Glencoffe Johnson (which i believe he will - Late stoppgae 9-12), what does he do, stop at Light Heavy or finish off business in the Super Middleweight divison.

Light Heavyweight - Superfights are available (Tarver, Jones etc) or he could even try to unify, i'm pretty sure he could get the WBO or WBA title at this weight, WBC belt (Tarver or Jones - Not so easy to beat - Hard Fights)

Super Middle - Plenty of good fights available and with Ottke gone and Mundine losing, he could even try to Unify this division.

Does anyone actually think a move to cruiserweight could be an option (3 weight world champ-gotta be tempting for Calzaghe)

Let me know your thoughts on this????

I think Joe has nailed his colours to the mast, he wants a super fight vs Tarver or RJJ at light heavy, making the weight was killing him but he can still do it so he has kept the super middle belt as an option should it go "tits up" against Glencoffe.

Unless Joe is willing to travel further than Manchester, I think we can forget the superfights. He'll hold on to his IBF title as long as he can and earn plaudits every time he makes a defence of a proper title. He'll learn a little too late in his career he was wasting his time - historically - with the WBO. Still, better late than never.

All I know is Calzaghe is never going to stop Johnson.

Regarding future opponents I expect Calzaghe to still be facing super middleweights whether he wins the light-heavy title or not.

Unlike Hatton, I don't think Joe needs too much protecting. Outside of Jones he can hold his own with anyone in the world.

He'll beat Johnson on points. Then Jones will beat Tarver. If it's a one sided beating, Tarver will then meet Calzaghe.
If it's another close fight, it might be Jones/Tarver 3.

I'm not so sure Jones will dominate this rematch - remember he lost the first three rounds last time, and you'd think weight issues wouldn't surface so early in a fight. Could just be Tarver's style?

A part of me thought the same thing. I just didn't want to say it. Joe has been making a lot of noises about still being able to make super-middle and about holding on to his WBO crown. I wonder why? There is the very real - and very sickening - possibility he will beat 'Ol Man River in June, then drop back down and revert to his paper title. All we'll get from Warren afterwards is: "Joe proved he could win a proper title at light-heavy but wanted a superfight at the weight and Jones, Tiozzo, Tarver, etc, wouldn't fight him. He can still make super-middle, so why stay at light-heavy and give away natural weight?"

Jones has nothing to gain by beating Joe Calzaghe. If he beats Tarver he's only gonna be motivated to fight a massive money fight at heavy, perhaps against Tyson or maybe one of the Klitchko's. Joe could fight Tarver if he wins.

Good question. I think the only southpaw he's fought in his career is Sobot (and he ain't skilled)

True. Tarver lost to Vassiliy Jirov in the '96 Olympics and to Eric Harding in the pros. Both southpaws of course.

There are good fights a plenty at Light Heavy. Jones, Tarver, Edrei, Gonzales, Michaelswecki all good fights. Even domestic opponents such as Oboh and Woods are better than most of his SM defences.

However, its this number of world title defences record, by a British fighter (the thing Calzaghe graves), is the factor that worries me. At 14 defences he is only 2 way from "rewriting" history. One of these I assume would be against the Veit vs who? winner. Which I will not be happy.

I would give Calzaghe a shit load of credit for capturing a meaningful world title against a decent opperator. However, even more question will be asked if he can't get another big one in the future - there can be no more "there is no good fighters excuses".

Dariuz might not be the fighter he once was, but he is still a threat. For me, and the Eurosport commentator (not Steve Holdsworth, but another) he beat Gonzales. He has also beaten Harmon and Hall by stoppage in recent fights and we are saying Hall is a tough fight for Woods.

I would still consider Dariuz a dangerous opponent, not the best Light Heavyweight, but he is still top 5 and probably a more difficult test than Johnson.
