Ross Puritty vs. Rocky Marciano

Ross "The Boss" Puritty a fighter as tough as they come. 6'3", 80" reach and around 250lbs and over. Reportedly never floored in his career and with a decent dig winning 27 of his 31 wins by stoppage. Yet retired with a record that on paper looks a very average 31(27)-20-3. He claimed to have never had an amateur fight.

But on closer inspection you will see wins over Jorge Luis Gonzalez (WTKO 7), Joe Hipp (WKO 10) and Wladimir Klitschko (WTKO 11). He also had Tommy Morrison down twice in a fight that ended in a draw, a fight many thought Puritty won. One tough dude who lost on points to other rated fighters such as Hasim Rahman (LUD 10), Michael Grant (LUD 10), Corrie Sanders (LUD 12), Larry Donald (LUD 10), Chris Byrd (LUD 10), Vitali Klitschko (LTKO 11) and Eddie Chambers (LUD 10). The only stoppages he suffered were on cuts.

How do you see the much smaller Marciano doing against him?

Marciano would probably outwork him and take a clear cut decision.

Ross is well down on points, but Rocky suddenly runs out if has fighting the bigger man. Surprise TKO9 win for Purrity!

Rocky Marciano would not lose a minute of a round to Ross Puritty.

It just depends on what Ross Puritty showed up. The guy who lost lots of decisions on points, or the guy who showed up to fight Wlad Klitschko and Tommy Morrison. The latter Ross Puritty probably would have given Rocky a whole-hearted beating over the course of the fight. I'm not saying Rocky wouldn't get his licks in. It's just that an 185 pound man, no matter who he is, is not going to have an accumulative effect on a 245 pound guy, but a 245 pound guy would on a 185 pound guy. When Puritty was "ON", he was "ON"! He could throw beautiful ferrocious overhand rights and lethal uppercuts with the best of them. He just lacked the proper trainer, and the proper manager. If he had both, he would have been a much more serious contender back then.

Who wins this fight? Probably Rocky by decision ( Ross did have one solid chin ), but it would be one entertaining slugfest which most people would not expect to see.

What makes you think someone as slow as a 245 Ross Puritty will land at all on a 190 Rocky Marciano? Puritty isn't working with a giant unmissable target like Wlad K or Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

It is exhausting to miss punches, by the way.

Let's get real. It's not rocket science that 189 pound Rocky isn't going to be shifting a peak version of Puritty. Probably he's going to have to settle for out working the big fella and winning in points. Whilst also noting that it's hard work being in the ring with these 21st century lumps.

Why a troll thread? Puritty is better than many of Marciano's opponents before he fought for the title plus bigger and harder hitting than anyone Marciano fought. Plus his chin was as solid as they come. Just because he was a journeyman doesn't mean he couldn't give Marciano a tough fight.

Marciano would give away 5 inches in height, 12 inches in reach and over 60lbs in weight against a hard hitting, granite chinned fighter. I have a feeling it wouldn't be an easy night for him.

Have you seen Purrity fight? He hardly ever jabbed, so his reach is meaningless. He also hardly ever threw this ferocious punches you speak about. When he did, he was always so tired after his barrage he'd spend the next 2 minutes doing nothing but eat punches.

This BS that a 185 lb man can't seriously hurt or "move" a guy the size of Purrity is completely bogus. Look at Michael Moorer, a guy naturally smaller than Marciano, move around Mike White who was a solid 6'10 270 lber and also a journeyman.

No Marciano would likely not knockout Purrity, who had a great beard, but he'd hurt Purrity badly to the body and drain his limited gas tank early, so that most of the fight would be the poor guy just taking beating without throwing much back.

And yet some incredibly mediocre heavyweights had an easy night's work with Puritty.

For some curious reason many boxing fans on the internet seem utterly convinced that being a 240lb heavyweight, i.e. having big heavy arms, a big chest, a big stomach etc will make their chin somehow more resistant to punches. That speed & stamina will suffer never enters into their heads-probably because the opposition is uniformly overweight.

Rocky Marciano could have come in 30lbs overweight but instead he locked himself in a farm and tortured himself into murderous condition for month's on end. And it is that professionalism that is now used as a stick to beat him with by the fat fetishists! Remarkable.

The little Rock's speed and fitness would make for some great animal taming of these big brutes.

And he gave some decent fighters a hard time too
