I read an interview with Andre Ward over Christmas, where Andre said he wanted to fight Groves next. Any news/gossip?

I blame George Groves - however, hastagging rematch or retire isn't managing your career.

Though I doubt that is all that is happening behind the scenes.

He is self-managed now according to the other thread.

Rumours he has taken tips from Audley are yet to be confirmed.

I hope he doesn't get too greedy and wants to go down the self management route just yet. I get worried he may be acting like he is a seasoned vet with world titles around his waist a little too soon.

Self managed ain't too bad. Just hire a great lawyer and it's fine.

Groves says he's shopping for promoters and people in the states and Germany are interested. I think Golden Boy might be the right way to go.

He was in the paper saying he'd spoken to Top Rank. I guess he'll go with whoever gives him the best signing on bonus and purses. Super middle seems to be a European division in the main so don't know what Golden Boy or Top Rank would do for him. Maybe Sauerland like Price could be the way to go?

He did have a deal with Golden Boy to promote him in the US earlier in his career, so he may go with them again. I don't see any issues with being self managed, a fighter with brains doesn't need a manager, they can negotiate themselves, have full control over their career and no one taking a 25% cut from them either.

I would imagine George thinks he can beat Ward and I think he'll be signing with whoever can get him that fight.

Without wanting to cause a ruck with you it shows your ignorance about what goes on behind the scenes in regards to managing and getting the best deal for boxers.

A lot of the time a top level boxer hasnt got a clue what the team are doing they just expect things done.

Fight purses
Sponsorship deals
TV appearances
Dinner show appearances
Planning of training camps
Sparring partners & their fees
Liaising with the promoter tickets
Liaising with the promoter revenue from the fight (Important as purse might be relying on prrofits from show ... PPV etc)
Liaising with the promoter - media commitments leading up to the fight

etc etc etc ... loads more stuff ..

For me a lot of that, especially the stuff about training camps and sparring partners can be done by the trainer. I'm not suggesting they have no team at all, just not a manager. Negotiations can be done by the fighter himself, with a lawyer and his trainer if they're smart. I wouldn't suggest a novice pro be self managed, I don't think the board allow it anyway, but for an experienced pro to be self managed isn't out of the question to me.

Sugar Ray Leonard did alright without a manager. Mike Trainer did a great job for Ray.

I concede to a lot of what some of you are writing:

however George is in his early 20's and is just about to hit the big time if he gets his next couple of fights right.

My opinion is if George wants to keep improving he needs to concentrate on nothing else but improving his fighting skills

I agree that's what he needs to do..... once training camp starts, there should be zero distractions.

what's paddy fitzpatrick like as a trainer ? i was talking to a amateur trainer mark that rated him highly before he joined up with groves

Most top fighters are self managed & decide with there coach what fights & routes they will take . Groves is behaving like he's a ppv star

Exactly what I said earlier.

Signing with an American promoter will not work unless you want to move to the US like Khan did. Groves needs to captivate the British public for a few more fights before venturing stateside IMO.

George cannot be distracted now and get greedy with the money side, he needs to focus on his boxing and boxing only. What Calzaghe did would be the best thing, once you have a few fights left and have made a big name for yourself then go it alone to maximise your earnings.

Any truth in the rumors that Froch never had a signed contract with Hennessey and was technically self managed and promoted throughout his pre matchroom career?

His next move is vital, he can't be too greedy short term or it will end up costing him. His popularity is at an all time high. He needs to be fighting ink the uk and at a normal time. Going to the Us now would be the worst possible career move, he'd lose to Ward, lose the good will of the fan base he's built up and have to start again.
