I have heard through my freind that speaks to andy (martins manager/agent) that he is out of the fight , what a terrible mis fortune this is . I have heard his head as gone since the fight got down graded to interim belt .So he as filled his belly with a keg of beer instead ,who blames him ? I hopefully will catch andy myself in the next couple of days but this is correct ,he hopes too put 2013 behind him and get a big fight in June/July.

It was a mickey mouse belt anyway. An interim belt is what it should of been, that or a final eliminator. You dont deserve the WBA belt unless you fight Golovkin.

If that's true then that's very unprofessional and self-destructive. He's been too inactive recently and now he's messing around even more.

The regular WBA title was hardly any better than the interim title anyway.

He shouldn't of ducked GGG then he wouldn't have to of worried about daft interim belts. June/July what's he planning on doing for the next 6 months? Only had 2 fights in 2013 one being a keep busy fight. 2 fights in 2012 one a keep busy fight and one to win a WBA bauble. He's 32 this year not getting any younger, he's wasting his prime

If he was really ducking Golovkin, why would he fight for a belt that makes him Golovkin's mandatory, which is due after the Adama fight?

You mean the belt he's already held for over a year? He's not even fighting for it now so he's ducked him again!

Columbo,

He is the WBA interim champion unless I am mistaken anyway (won on the Hatton vs Senchenko undercard)- so his fight with Fletcher would have only been a defence of his title.

So unless Fletcher is fighting TBA for the vacant interim title - then isn't Murray in a favourable position to get to GG. Essentially Fletcher became a mark time fight GG the minute it changed to interim.

Should have taken the fight though - might have been upgraded eventually, Brain Magee can always say he was WBA world champion.

Jackukmma,

How is Murray ducking GG AGAIN, he is not even scheduled to fight him, hasn't been called mandatory? If it is true that he is not fighting Fletcher it is not suggested (YET) that Murray will be stripped.

If its true and I hope it's not someone else will step in and become champ if GGG moves up to SMW

Im pretty sure Murray was offered a fight with Golovkin and turned it down. I think he was offered that fight actually on that very bill! I'm guessing that he's lost his interim champion status now and Fletcher vs whoever will be competing for that 'title'.

That wont be happening anytime soon. Even if he does step up to SMW, i'd imagine it would only be for one fight against Ward and then he'd step back down again.

He was offered the GGG fight a while ago on this bill. If he gets his interim stripped due to pulling out of this one because of motivational issues then he's ducked him again

Nothing has been confirmed, but this fight should of been easy money really.

Surely better to fight, keep active, get paid and pick-up/retain the belt and therefore the shot at the Champ.

Afterall, its a very, very winnable fight.

I don't expect Sergio Martinez liked being the away fighter in the UK all those years ago, but he took those fights to keep his name in the spotlight, and hope for bigger things.
If these rumours are true about Murray , he should take note of what some of the big name boxers have had to go through.

I am really happy justice has been done here and that the belt has been downgraded.

While I don't disagree with most of the sentiments being raised here, it's worth looking back at the lineage of the belt currently held by Golovkin.

Felix Sturm was the WBA Champion since regaining it from Javier Castillejo in 2007. This was back when there were no Super Champions and Interims were used mostly legitimately.
Sturm defended this belt a number of times until he was arbitrarily upgraded to Super Champion by the WBA (not through a unification or other obvious means) in 2010.
Sturm defended and retained his Super title until defeat to Daniel Geale in 2012.

Meanwhile, Golovkin won the vacant Interim WBA title by beating Milton Nunez in August 2010. Handily, by the time of his next fight in December 2010, Sturm had been upgraded, so Golovkin was upgraded to "normal" champion too. Golovkin now held the belt he does today.

While Sturm and Golovkin were allowed to not fight each other for over 2 years while both holding WBA belts, Daniel Geale was stripped of the title within 2 months for not fighting Golovkin. This meant that the Super title was vacated/redundant and automatically promoted Golovkin to the top of the WBA tree.

Now I'm not arguing that Golovkin is probably the best fighter around at 160, but its interesting to note that the route he took to get to where he is is the one that is being criticised as "ducking" when applied to Martin Murray. Golovkin has yet to meet another title holder and the belts he has won were either vacancies or awarded out of the ring.

I agree with the general sentiment. By all accounts though, Golovkin was prepared to fight either Sturm initially or Geale but neither one wanted any part of him for obvious reasons *the money then would of also been non-existent pretty much*.

The WBA should hire you - I would put money on you having a better grasp of the situation than them :TU:
